Journal tomhudson's Journal: Wii == crappy gaming experience. 30

Next: Take 2

After all the hype, I finally bought one today, along with a second remote. Wii sports, Wii Play, Super Mario Galaxy, and The Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess. The best of the bunch is the bowling demo that came with the console. The problems with Mario and Zelda are easy enough to enumerate: - They both have way too many cut scenes (borrrrING!!!), and Zelda's game play absolutely sucks.

Technically, a nice product, ruined by crappy games that simply don't have the "grab me and play" factor.

I'll buy the Wii Fit when they have it in stock, and probably Mario Kart (again, wasn't in stock), but the old SNES was more fun.

update: If you can put up with the long interruptions between game plays, and not being able to skip through the cut sceens, Super Mario Galaxy is kind of fun ...

Wii == crappy gaming experience.

  • Admittedly I've never bought one, but we do have one at work that I play with from time to time. And beyond the occasional Wii Sports (mainly golf), I really don't see the allure. Perhaps it's just the games we have, however I notice even in Wii Sports that small movements are often either a) not registered or b) don't map properly to the movement that was made. This can be particularly seen in Wii Golf when trying to make a very gentle putt -- I can't count how many times I gently putt forward, only to

    • It was because of everyone talking about the "crappy games" that I also bought Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy - both "franchise titles" for nintendo - so today was a bit of an expensive lesson (the wii console, wii sports + 2nd controller, super mario galaxy, zelda, 2nd nanchuk, etc ...).

That being said, I still intend to pick up a Wii Fit - I've tried it, and it was fun. Also, a full bowling game (the one that comes with the Wii is more "demo-ware", and it was fun also), 2 more controllers and nanchuks, a

      • mario kart is a effing blast.

        • If they had had it in stock, I would have it right now :-) On another note, once you get used to the long pauses while they explain YET AGAIN the story line, Super Mario Galaxy is kind of fun. As for Mario Kart Racing, it's on my list, as is Super Mario Paper, and a Wii Fit.

      • FWIW, i *highly* recommend lego star wars. addictive to the nth degree.

        • I hadn't considered it ... what makes it so fun?

          • personally, i like simple games that are more about puzzle solving than memorizing combos and lots of cut scenes (for instance, i'm going to exchange "force unleashed" asap). if you can find a place to let you demo it, i'd give it a whirl.

  • Maybe it's because I don't have the fast-twitch perfect hand-eye coordination, maybe it's because I like games I can play without needing a PhD in D-pad, but I *like* the Wii - it's not perfect by any means, and it does seem to like certain controller positionings better than others, but it's fun - and, Wii fit is helping me lose weight.

    • I'm not into first-person shooters or any of that other stuff, but I *will* be buying both the Fit and a full bowling game specificially because they ARE fun, and you just start playing them ...

  • You should try picking up a copy of Boom Blox. I've played it at a friend's house, and it's a lot of fun. It was an absolute blast with multiple people playing.
    • Thanks. I've spent some time this evening looking at the games that are available, and I now have a shopping list.
  • and we like it.

Some of the games are a bit sucky in terms of game mechanics. Pool game I am looking at your clunky interface (not the pool game with Wii Play good game mechanics it lacks options).

But neither do we spend more than hour or so at a time and not long and involved games. Even though I am a big fan of Luigi (Mario sucks for always going first), no Mario games at all (yet). Too long and complex for us to bother with.

I am playing lots of pinball, some guitar hero (III) - still on easy - and kee

    • Thanks. When I have a chance, I'll check out the pinball game :-)

      Which pinball game?

Williams Pinball Classics not released here yet to best of my knowledge

Looks like the same physics engine for both, and I'm more interested in Williams anyway :D Maybe I'll order it next payday.

      • I believe this one [futureshop.ca] - Pinball Hall of Fame

With over eight tables from the 60's through the 90's to choose from, Pinball Hall of Fame will offer a large selection of pinball tables.

Pinball Hall of Fame developers worked closely with pinball experts from the Pinball Hall of Fame in addition to conducting their own extensive research. The result is a game that will provide players with the ultimate pinball experience with realistic physics, true-to-life graphics and sounds captured directly from the actual t

  • Stay away from Wall-E. Gameplay is horrendous. Boring as well. I'd rather play golf, or curling. (I'd rather play Postal or something with a lot of gore, but I have to think of the children :/)
    • Thanks for the tip. Maybe we should make our own list of what we like and don't like, and why, since our tastes are probably NOT the same as the average gamespot frequent-flyer :-)
      • Thanks for the tip. Maybe we should make our own list of what we like and don't like, and why, since our tastes are probably NOT the same as the average gamespot frequent-flyer :-)

Yes, but on the other hand: if I would've known that Wall-E was dreadful to play, I certainly wouldn't have bought it. Despite occuring differences in tasts, 'bad' gameplay is probably bad gameplay.

  • Star Wars is just fun. Lots of little puzzles. 95% are logic or 'think outside the box' types. Very few jumping puzzles. Indiana Jones lego is ok. Some humorous bits. Lego Batman is decent, with the best vehicle parts of the three games.

Super Mario Galaxy is the first Mario game that I've ever thought didn't suck to high heaven.

Wii Kart is pretty fun. You gotta take it a bit lightly, lest you get annoyed because your winning run was screwed by a well timed power up going to another character.

    Raving Rabbids

    • I'll keep the list in mind as I make my purchases ... I intend to buy a decent game library over the next few months for when friends come to visit, and don't want to pee away my money on stuff they won't like.

      • by gmhowell ( 26755 ) *

It also depends somewhat on the nature of your friends. What kind of games do they like to play? Sadly, for many of the 'party games', you have to dick around unlocking stuff before they easily become available for group play. Quite a pantload if you ask me.

      • Gone through GH III on Easy, and play a hole of Tiger Woods' PGA 08 with the woman every night. But yeah, the controllers are a bit iffy - you will figure them out, though.

The kids can't put Mario Kart down. They played through MK DD on the 'cube and this is just more of the same. Of course, the Wii is hooked up to the projector (~70" screen) and surround system (Yamaha RX-V463 receiver with H/K HKTS-11 speakers) so it's a bit of a change from the old 29" Philips CRT TV. ;-)

    • Wii Kart is pretty fun. You gotta take it a bit lightly, lest you get annoyed because your winning run was screwed by a well timed power up going to another character.

THIS! If you have a major lead in the last leg, you'll get destroyed by about 15 different powerups and end up in 7th place... frustrating as hell...

I'm a big lover of Metroid. Your typical FPS, but with different controls that makes it more 'natural'. Granted, I played the first two, and loved them... so it was a continuation of story
    • I play SSBB with the kids and its a lot of fun. I can't do it with the new wiimotes though, I use the old GC controllers. There is a certain amount of "twitch" factor, but some of it is just picking a character and learning its particular strnegths and weaknesses. I can win as Link, Marth, or Ike, but can't do anything else with any of the others.

The thing about the Wii is that its popularity is derived from people who would not otherwise have bought a console. That's why its sales are so high and wh

My kid switches to the GC controllers. It all seems like a random button mashing fest to me, so it doesn't really matter which controller I use.

        • When I first started playing I discovered that hitting the "B" button on the GC controller (the little red one) made Link shoot an arrow. So I'd stand off to one side as my stepsons beat eachother up on the other side of the screen and just keep shooting arrows at them;-) Eventually they'd get ticked and come over and kill me, but after awhile I learned how to defend myself. I still lose more than I win, but if I'm practiced up its only a 60/40 losing to winning split.
  • Take this with a grain of salt, because I liked Twilight Princess (which has some pretty fun set pieces once you get out of the cutscene-heavy stuff--the duels on the bridges and the defend-the-cart-on-horseback scene are both favorites of mine because the horse archery works way better than Ocarina's did).

Boom Blox and De Blob are both a lot of quick, zany fun, with the added bonus that Boom Blox will do more for your ability to finely control the Wii remote than any other game because it uses motions you

    • Based on other people's comments, I went shopping yesterday afternoon and picked up a few titles, including Boom Blox. I hadn't considered De Blob ... I'll keep it in mind, thanks.
