Journal tomhudson's Journal: Has Bush screwed up enough to guarantee "Billary" win? 13

"Show me the $$$".

The simple facts:

  1. both Clinton (D) and Obama (D) have raised more $$$ so far than any republican candidate;
  2. in terms of cash on hand, Giuliani (R) has more than Romney (R), but even that only represents 1/3 of the war chest Clinton has on;
  3. Romney (R) is the Republican front-runner, $$$-wise, but his cash on hand is woefully under his total debts, so he'll have money woes going forward unless things change quickly;

Currently, Giuliani leads the republican race, but looses to Clinton by 8% - a wide margin in an election.

The question is simple - has the economy become so screwed up, and US social and government policy along with it, that people will go with the "nostalgia factor" of another Clinton White House?

Latest polls, year-long downward trend for Giuliani.

"He who has the gold, makes the rules" - and at this point, Clinton has the most bucks by a comfortable margin. In an election year when voters are becoming more financially insecure, an "ABC" campaign (Anyone but Clinton) will probably backfire.

Has Bush screwed up enough to guarantee "Billary" win?

  • But Guliani is quite mad and could actually do more damage than Billiary if elected. I mean, they are both fronts for plutocrats (or plutocrats themselves) so their policies will be the same no matter what, but Guliani is incompetant and doesn't know it (and is mad as well), so he could theoretically do more damage than Billiary.

    I'd vote for Billiary if I was American, if for no other reason than the resulting sex scandle which would inevitably surface. Think of the fun that'd be.

    • Ironically, a longing for "the good ole days" when the worst that came out of Washington was a sex scandal will be a factor. People vote with their guts, their emotions; also, they have "selective memory" - the "good old days" never really exist as we remember them, but that doesn't stop us from unconsciously yearning for them.

      The we have comments like this [chicagotribune.com] last month

      As Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has firmed up her lead in the Democratic presidential race, speculation about her potential running mate is

        I hate to admit it, but Hillary with Obama as a running mate makes me less ill than Hillary with anyone else. Plus it could eventually catapult him into the White House later.
        • How about Hillary, with Bill for Veep?

          This NY Times [nytimes.com] article spells out the possibility back in the 2004 election, and how it doesn't infringe the 22nd Amendment.

          Its no more strange than having 2 generations of Bush ... (or in 2028 or 2032 being faced with the prospect of Jenna Bush for president ...).

            Only if she steps down after taking office :-D But I don't think it is gonna happen.

    Called it back in march. [slashdot.org] I'm not giving Hillary 8 points though. I'm thinking it'll be more like 3.
    • If there's a record low voter turnout (mostly due to republicans not voting) I'd say it will be 5 to 10 points in favor of Clinton. Then again, facing a Clinton presidency, a lot of republicans will move heaven and earth to vote ...

      But what happens if it becomes a Clinton/Clinton ticket? This article [nytimes.com] makes the case that Bill Clinton could run for Veep without infringing the 22nd Amendment.

      The first objection, the constitutional one, can be disposed of easily. The Constitution does not prevent Mr. Clint

        True, the 22nd doesn't bar him - but the 12th would be a bigger hurdle for him: "But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States." Clearly, he isn't eligible to be President again - so that would appear to bar him from the Vice-Presidency as well.

        • Looks like it ...

          Hey, at least "Ah-nold" isn't able to run either :-)

        • The 12th amendment also bars the electoral college members from voting for Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates that are both from the same state that is represented by those members. I.e., they would have to write off the state of New York. (Or, rather, I believe those members could vote for Hillary as President and some other Democrat as VP.)

  • I'm going with Hillary by 12 if versus Guiliani. He'll do something to implode his campaign.
