Comment Re:California is Just Different (Score 1) 107

I wasn't born there, but grew up there. 17 years...a few more later when I returned.

Since then lived in many parts of the US and Europe. My take is that Cali is always a few years advanced compared to the normal US (sorry, NY). More progressive and liberal, and eventually people in other states begin to assume the same attitudes or laws. I could be wrong, and some things are simply a "California problem" with no comparable comparison to other states. California is blessed with a magical and wonderous geography.... but that brings some special problems and solutions....they just cant be held to the same standard as other states....at least not in the way we do things now. Anyway, good post...nice to see that someone else might see things as I do.... America...or the USA, is what it is...but there are a few pockets of, well, difference. California is one of the 2 or 3.

I really enjoy Arch. I've only had one problem as a casual user. I can't understand why my wireless works for some weeks then suddenly starts crapping out....then absolutely dies. I've tried the solutions that I've found on the internet but nothing brings it back. I always have to either install new or reinstall an image. I boot multiple OS'es and only have this problem with Arch-based Linux...no other linux does this....that's why I keep them on as boot options. It can't be a hardware failure, as the other installs have been running without failures for much longer, and still currently working...I don't know. I really preferred my Arch-based distros more than the others...they just seem to always have a wireless network failure that I can't fix with a day or two of trying...and I'm not gonna start trying to get more technical to fix something that just worked from the beginning but just simply fails when it feels like it. Package manager, configurations, lightness of it all felt great...I just keep experiencing the same problems with it.

same here. I like the "decompression" time on my commutes. When I drive it isn't the same. I guess walking and using public transport takes away the aspect of being in control of my time or whatever else, but it's also helped me develop patience. Kinda reminds me of when I was in the infantry (hours of boredom/moments of terror). My favorite part of course is that I live in Germany, so drinking a beer on your train ride home isn't looked down upon so badly when not done to excess (sheiss' Azzis!)

I do realize that this is a business/job decision. I would say "Hell no!" quickly as my personal life is infinitely more valuable to me than my work life. However, for all the people here saying crap like "optimum productivity" or "studies have shown that the best work comes in..." or whatever blah blah I'm reading, I would like to remind some of you who grew up during the BBS days and watched Slashdot (or Linux when it was still primordial) to think of all the great software written by very passionate coders who are "legend" for "staying up drinking Mountain Dew for 20 hours to find the solution" or whatever the hell nostalgic memory you have. Seems to me many people here will brag about doing this as if they had seen Nirvana, but would resist doing it with petty excuses when they are asked or paid. Hmmm.
