It was the exact job I got hired in at at the beginning of my career

When was the beginning of your career? I'm not saying this wasn't fraud, but things change. Our hiring standards now are such that there is no way I would get the graduate position I got at my current employer. In fact we are hiring people with higher qualifications than I had 10 years into my career. I would have probably answered what you did, and I would have been wrong.

The qualifications themselves are worthless, but that's beside the point. We now expect graduates to have masters degrees and experience with things that we never needed to in the past, and that applies to local people as well, not immigrants.

There is nothing safer in adding a new file format. It increases the potential attack surface.

That's not the question here. There is nothing optional about adding the file format, in fact back when it was optional Google removed it from their experimental Chrome release for exactly this reason. But now their hand has been forced by PDF/A and they will need JPEGXL support in order to ship a browser capable of reading PDFs.

The comparison here isn't between Chrome with JPEGXL and without. It's a comparison between JPEGXL using the rust based library and JPEGXL using the C++ based library that came before.

There are well established benchmarks that provide insight into what we can expect

The one thing we can expect from CPU benchmarks is that they do not reflect their performance in laptops since in a laptop the performance is almost universally defined by the thermal / power envelope. That's why you can get laptops on the market with Intel i5s that well and truly outperform Intel i7s despite CPU benchmarks claiming the exact opposite.

If you can't put two and two together and see what the benchmarks imply, that's on you.

You're not putting 2 and 2 together. You're putting 2x and 2y together and making a conclusion without the 2nd equation that you need to identify the missing variables.

But hey, if you want to live a life based on ignorance / make decisions based on wrong information you do you. I'm an engineer so I'm biased against that level of stupidity.

I understand the myopic that makes this happen. Amazon gets a marquee event, and supposedly boosts its stature and hopefully drives viewership. Everything a corporate vice president wants. The Emmy organization gets the most money, that they use for⦠whatever. Win-win right?

Well, no. Viewership will drop because now people have to get an Amazon prime subscription as opposed to simply having basic cable, or (gasp!) an antenna. They wonâ(TM)t even know when it happens because they wonâ(TM)t see the ads for it on a competing network. And so what used to be yearly appointment viewing cultural touchstone dies.

That changed when the PDF/A decided to adopt JPEGXL officially. Now PDF readers need to implement JPEGXL and both Chrome and Firefox include PDF readers in the browser. Their hand was forced.

Nothing has turned into a religion. Programming rust is safer than not programming in rust due to the nature of the language and how it needs to be used to create the same class of bugs. That's not religion, that's a simple verifiable fact. No one said it's "safe", they said "safer". There's a previous implementation in a language without memory safety to compare it to.

No one said that. No one said it's "safe". They said it's "safer". Memory-safety makes the whole codebase safer than not having memory safety.

Now go look up what a "comparative adjective" is so you don't say something stupid again in the future.
