Comment AutoCAD (Score 1) 515

I started out writing Autolisp programs for AutoCAD, 25 yrs ago. Used several other languages since then.
I still like Lisp a lot. Always makes me laugh when script kiddies whine about parentheses.
Boo-hoo-hoo, Johnny. I didn't even have a computer when I started. It was pad and pencil all the way.
Back in the day, I walked 10 miles to school, knee deep in parentheses. Those suckers hurt like hell, but look at me now.

On the 25th anniversary of Classic VB, Return It To Its Programmers
Microsoft has been asked a number of times to open source VB6. This has been repeatedly rejected without any real reason being given.
However to remove a language from its community without an exceptional reason is an act of vandalism. The new Microsoft claims to back open source, why not in this case?
There is no need for Microsoft to do any more work on the code base — simply open source it and allow the community to keep it alive. Don't deride the attempt to make Classic VB open source if you are happy with .NET. There is no doubt C# and VB .NET are sophisticated well designed languages and perhaps you, like me, have no desire to return to VB6 or anything like it. Vote for the proposal not because you want to use VB6 or that you think it is worth having — Vote for it because a company like Microsoft should not take a language away from its users.

Stack ranking is for managers who are not grown-ups.

Train your people. Teach them to improve. Defend them while they learn. Make them better and they will make the company better.

If you are in charge and something goes wrong, it's your responsibility. It's your fault. And if it isn't your fault, it's still your fault because you're the manager.

You are responsible. 100% of the time. No exceptions.

Take responsibility for your job and do your job. Train your people. Take care of your people. Grow up.

Well said. Wish I still had mod points for this.

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: How To Begin Simple Robotics As a Hobby?

nedko.m writes: I would describe myself as more of a "software guy" rather than somebody who likes to play with hardware much, but I've wanted to start doing basic robotics projects as a hobby for quite a while now. However, I was never sure where to start from and what the very first steps should be in order to get more familiar with the hardware aspects of robotics. For instance, I would like to start off with a simple soccer robot. Any suggestions on what low-budget parts should I obtain, which would provide me, subsequently, extensibility to a bit more elaborate projects?

Submission + - Apple accused of e-book price-fixing

An anonymous reader writes: Technology giant Apple is to begin its defence against charges by the US government that it tried to fix the prices of e-books. The iPad-maker is accused of working with publishers in 2009 to set prices in an effort to compete in the e-book market dominated by Amazon. Quotes from Steve Jobs' official biography have been cited as evidence in the case.

Submission + - Whale meat advertised as source of strength amid flagging sales in Japan (abc.net.au) 1

beaverdownunder writes: From the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

Japan's peak whaling body has launched a new campaign to promote whale meat as a nutritious food that enhances physical strength and reduces fatigue.

With about 5,000 tonnes of whale meat sitting unwanted in freezers around Japan, the country's Institute for Cetacean Research has decided to launch a new campaign to promote the by-product of its so-called scientific whaling program.

Once popular in school lunches, younger generations of Japanese rarely, if ever, eat whale.

But the institute hopes to revive flagging interest by advertising whale meat as a great source of balenine — a substance believed to enhance energy and physical health.

Submission + - Ask Slashdot - How to sleuth a Skype account hijacker

An anonymous reader writes: My Skype account was hijacked, which I discovered after Skype suspended it for suspicious activity, including a number of paid calls and an attempt to debit my card. Now that I've secured the account again, I can see the call history — there are several numbers called in Senegal, Mali, Benin and Philippines. Obviously I could call them myself and create a bit of havoc in their lives, but ideally I'd like to trace the high-jacker himself — perhaps with some kind of "social engineering" approach. Or is it just a waste of time?
