A tiny minority of movies like the Dune and Avengers films are worth paying to see on a big screen. But I have no idea why people pay that much money and sit through the advertising just to watch a derivative summer comedy.

There are people who spend hours a day reading all kinds of AI slop LinkedIn posts that have nothing to do with jobs. I know people who stopped using Instagram, X, Bluesky, and Threads for marketing entirely because nobody pays attention to anything on those platforms. But they make lots of money from their LinkedIn posts because LinkedIn users just love that shit.

This sounds great. But I guarantee you that OpenAI is secretly running a network of sham PACs, funneling dark money to campaigns, and lobbying to make sure that this never actually happens.

Because Oracle makes money hand over fist and pays well. Sure everyone will be fucked if OpenAI tanks, but in that case most of the tech sector will be tanking, too, and jobs wonâ(TM)t be safe at any employer. Might as well collect a fat salary at Oracle before the shit show starts.

Investment bankers in New York are absolutely aware of how much time they spend working. They know that they slept on a cot the last two nights, have eaten delivery for their last twenty meals, and cannot remember what their friends look like. An America full of old tech, frozen in time, actually sounds pretty cool. Everybody is running Linux or BSD on a computer cobbled together from parts. People have revived old Sun, Next, and SGI workstations. DEC computers get business use again. Large files are transferred by couriers. It sounds like a paradise for those of us who cut our teeth on the computers of the eighties and nineties.

OpenAI probably shut Sora down so the Sora budget can go somewhere with a better looking future. Every week Altman's plans for data centers full of NVIDIA chips gobbling up incredible amounts of nuclear power get bigger. That money has to come from somewhere.
