I was never big on reading books when I was a kid in the 80s but back then at least when we did not have tablets and smartphones, we only had the TV and video games which was not mobile I think I need to point out as that meant we needed to consume other things in our rooms or on the bus to school. So we also had a lot of comic books sold all around and I was an avid reader of those. It may not have been as good as reading books but I credit it for my ability to read and write English as it is not my main language. Comics were cheap back then as I used my pocket money to buy Superman and other DC comics at the time. Eventually I was reading magazines a lot, Starlog for instance or Tandy Rainbow magazines as I owned one. Still not books but I was reading. I think this was a gateway for kids at the time that is now lost.
I was always forcing myself to read books in my early adult life, going for sci-fi style books but it was always a drag to finish what I started and they were far and they were far and few sadly.
Eventually I found a few books I really enjoyed reading. For myself I found that reading books in relation to real people were interesting to read. While I didn't read much of those. I zipped through the biography of Steve Jobs and the story of how Rob Ford managed to become the mayor of Toronto. So I think the hard part if too keep reading different forms of writing until you find something you enjoy.
These days I keep telling myself I need to read more to stave off the affects of all this media consumption and AI thinking for us.
Ironically, it's while consuming
Coldfusion's Youtube channel that I was getting confirmation of what I alway suspected and I invite anyone here to check it our if you aren't convinced. Very well documented.
