Journal subgeek's Journal: why am i moderated up in journals? 13

i can't figure out why comments like this one get moderated up in journals. i especially don't get it as i accidentally typed "my" instead of "me," which makes the comment slightly nonsensical. maybe somebody just wants to make sure you all see that i'll be with my family over the hollidays and on slashdot much less? i don't know.

if one of you out there is trying to make sure that my karma stays capped, don't worry about it. they've taken away the number you can see for karma, but there is still a limit to how excellent it can be. i appreciate the gesture, but your points would be better spent on intelligent comments. the only other thing i can think of is that possibly when people have some mod points left that are about to expire, they just moderate the more recent of their friends' comments.

i won't be mad if it continues. i just don't get why. anybody have insight into this issue?

why am i moderated up in journals?

Comments Filter:
  • I have some mod points, I can lower it if it's bothering you :)
    • if it makes you feel better. i don't really care. i am more just curious about why people would use their points on a comment like that. my only guess is that it's targeted a person over a comment. i think moderation should be granted without consideration of who posted it. but moderation on slashdot seems to be a bit like judging figure skating.
  • First, it stands to reason that people with mod points are reading journals. So why not mod posts there?

Second, with friends/foes, if you've got mod points, why not use them to help/hurt people?

    • that's about what i figured. i don't really see anything wrong with it. it does surprise/amuse me that people think i deserve karma. i suppose i should thank those responsible for the compliment.
      • thanks i guess to the mods.

Personally, I moderate the following way:

I will moderate any interesting/insightful/funny/etc comments in stories/journals that have not yet been moderated.

I usually won't mod up a comment if it is sitting at 3 or more unless it is particularly good/relevent/funny/etc...

I will read comments in journals for mod-worthy posts and moderate up anything there.

Finally, if I still have points left after a couple of days I will look at recent comments by friends/fans who don't have the +1 modifier yet. (If any of their recent comments have a score of 2 with no moderations I assume they have the modifier. If they never use the +1 modifier I can't tell, so I might mod up someone who already has excellent karma - deal with it.)

I tend not to deliberately mod up friends/fans, however if you are on my friends list it is usually because I think your comments (and journals) are worthy of attention, so it is reasonable to assume that I would have a bias there.

Having said the above... GirlLovingTheVibe - if you read this, post some comments somewhere. If you keep silent I can't give you mod points! ;-)

Note: I do not change my reading habits when moderating - I will still read the same stories and will still only scan comments until something jumps out at me that looks worthy of reading...
  • But I read journals and just give everyone mod points at a whim. Always, undermoderated though.
  • maybe they find your signature witty. or maybe they are happy to finally find someone who is not bothered that they are an idiot. or maybe you have multiple slashdot login names, and you mod up your own posts. yeah... and thus concludes my slashdot post for december. -- it doesn't bother me that you could be an idiot [slashdot.org].
    • hey biddy. i'm honored that your post for this month is in my journal. that's a greater honor than bonus mods. trouble maker. instigator. i may spend too much time on slashdot, but i'd never get to play video games if i had multiple ids.

i think it's important to know what you are and to be comfortable with that.
  • ...Looking at that journal entry, it looks like everybody commenting in it got modded up as interesting, despite being basically personal comments rather than broadly useful information (I guess those would be informative instead tho...)

I agree, it does sound a little odd to mod up that sort of thing, but I guess that many people (not necessarily myself or most slashdotters amongst them) are interested in random details of other people's lives, so to them it would be interesting, and perhaps some mods would feel like acting to encourage people to post comments that are a bit more human-oriented than many slashdot posts.

Am I just stating the obvious again here? I really don't know.

I'm starting to think I should make that my .sig...

    • i like the nethack reference.

look out! strange things can happen on friday the 13th!

i think the moderation thing is like judging figure skating where people are sometimes rewarded on reputation alone.

        So you should! ;)

Ironically, I've not actually played the thing for quite a while now, must be a few months! But then, I don't really play games in general that much. Think the last roguelike I played was Zangband v2.7.summat. It had a wilderness and stuff. Neat. Also, like countless people on rec.games.roguelike.development, I'm vaguely trying to make one myself- but just a very simple one at first, to get familiar with the design issues.

I suppose I mainly liked getting those messages (see also "Good Luck! Full moon tonight.") when (re)starting a game at those times, it was almost like a catchphrase or something. After a while, I twigged that it was actually working out the real-life phase of the moon and that it had an actual game effect.

Then, at the time I recreated my Slashdot account (the old one was eaten by goblins), I'd been playing the thing a lot, so that's what I chose, and I never felt much like changing it. I'll prolly go back to the game some time soon.
