Submission + - SvarDOS - an open-source DOS distribution (svardos.osdn.io)

sproketboy writes: SvarDOS is an open-source project that is meant to integrate the best out of the currently available DOS tools, drivers and games. DOS development has been abandoned by commercial players a very long time ago, mostly during early nineties. Nowadays, it survives solely through the efforts of hobbyists and retro-enthusiasts, but this is a highly sparse and unorganized ecosystem. SvarDOS aims to collect available DOS software, package it and make it easy to find and install applications using a network-enabled package manager (like apt-get, but for DOS and able to run even on a 8086 PC).

Submission + - Nasa launches open source portal (nasa.gov)

sproketboy writes: NASA has launched code.nasa.gov which will become a portal for NASA's open source software development activities. In its current form, it hosts a directory of the organization's open source software projects and provides documentation about NASA's open source software processes.

Submission + - Oracle killing Java Webstart (java.net)

sproketboy writes: "It seems Oracle has decided in their infinite wisdom to remove digital signatures from the Java projects that they put into the open source community. Of course this breaks any application out there depending on Java Webstart using these libs. Looks like Java3D and JAI are currently affected — probably other APIs are as well.

Oh Oracle! What are we supposed to do with you?"

Submission + - Intel to Universities: No Patents, Please, Just Op (innovationexcellence.com)

sproketboy writes: "Since January, four U.S. universities have agreed to host Intel Science and Technology Centers (ISTCs) that will be funded at the rate of $2.5 million a year for five years. But wait, there’s A Catch: the company has made it a condition that in order to receive the millions, your university must open source any resulting software and inventions that come out of this research funding."

Submission + - Project Darkstar no more (projectdarkstar.com)

sproketboy writes: Project Darkstar, an open source software platform that simplifies the development of horizontally scalable servers for online games from Sun labs is being discontinued as of the Oracle acquisition. This project, mentioned a couple of years back on slashdot was a unique concept for building a application server specific to on-line gaming. Sadly they were so close at version 0.9.11 (which is still very stable).
Hopefully the open source community can get involved and help continue work on this project.

Submission + - The 25 Year Old BSD Bug

sproketboy writes: 1983. The year of the IBM PC XT, the Apple Lisa, Pioneer 10 leaving the solar system, and Hooters opening up shop in Florida. It's also the birthyear of a 25 year old BSD bug, squashed only a few days ago.

So much for the many-eyes theory?
