Journal smooth wombat's Journal: 75th anniversay of Plutos discovery 2

Apparently the 75th anniversay of Plutos discovery isn't geek worthy but talking about internet cafes in China is. Such is life.

February 18th marks the 75th anniversary of the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh. At age 26 he had been assigned to find the theoretical ninth planet. While switching back and forth between photographic plates he observed the speck and the rest is history.

There is still some controversy as to whether Pluto is actually a planet. Smaller than our Moon, Pluto has an atmosphere and seasons as well as its own moon, Charon.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at New Yorks Museum of Natural History, removed Pluto from the exhibit five years and lumped Pluto in with items from the Kuiper Belt. In the previous CNN article he was quoted as saying he has an entire folder of hate mail from third graders because of this move.

  • I didn't realize that Pluto actually had seasons. I think the Pluto debate would be a pretty entertaining one to follow on slashdot. Hopefully they'll run the story on before the anniversay gets here.
