Comment Percentage inflation and sports cliches (Score 1) 568

It seems to be sports stars who do this most often. It started out as "everyone on the team will give 110%", but now that's not good enough, and I've started seeing quotes where they're giving 120% or more. If you can't win with 110% of your maximum effort, you obviously just need to try harder.

Other irritating misused cliches include the use of 'literally' to mean 'figuratively' in an emphatic way, as in "The atmosphere here is literally boiling with excitement" - also a sports related remark, though this time from a commentator.

Journal Journal: Almost a month

since I last made an entry. Most days I just don't seem to have time to do this (it's not exactly top of my list of priorities). At least today I've managed to get somewhere with work, after almost all of last week was spent tracking down an odd problem with a shell script.

Journal Journal: More meetings

Lots of meetings in the last few days. Everyone gets back from holiday (except me - I never holiday in August because I prefer to visit places not full of school children) and wants to hold meetings. Irritating for those of us who work from home and like it that way. I normally go into the office about once a fortnight, but this is the fourth time this fortnight.

Journal Journal: Presentation blues

I've got to write a presentation today about one of the projects I'm working on - where we've got to with each strand of the work. I don't mind talking informally about it, giving people the idea of what's going on and where we are. I don't even mind producing documentation. It's the idea of presenting itself, the formal standing up in front of the projector, that I never enjoy. Hence the lack of enthusiasm at this point.

Journal Journal: Moderator access today!

I know it says that "metamoderators are more likely to earn moderator points", but I always seem to have points when I've not had time to metamoderate for a few days. Presumably this is just me being statistically abnormal, not CowboyNeal lying.
