Free Wi-Fi: the Movement To Give Away Your Internet For the Good of Humanity 505

pigrabbitbear writes "We are strangely territorial when it comes to our wireless networks. The idea of someone siphoning off our precious bandwidth without paying for it is, for most people, completely unacceptable. But the Open Wireless Movement wants to change all that. 'We are trying to create a movement where people are willing to share their network for the common good,' says Adi Kamdar, an activist with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. 'It's a neighborly thing to do.' That's right, upstanding citizen of the Internet, you can be a good neighbor just by opening your wireless network to strangers — or so the line goes. The ultimate vision is one of neighborhoods completely void of passwords, where any passerby can quickly jump on your network and use Google Maps to find directions or check their email or do whatever they want to do (or, whatever you decide they can do)."

Back in the late 70's there was a new OS, CP/M 80 Version 2. Included in the BIOS support was a simple and very effctive sector blocking / Deblocking algorithm. The default support was 128 byte sectors on the common disk environment, 8 inch floppy disks. With the sector blocking and deblocking code, any size of physical sectors could be supported. On my Morrow Thinker Toy's double density controller, I was able to go from 256 byte sectors to 1024 byte sectors gaining a nice huck of space. In 1981 I worked for Micromation and had a chance to play with a 14 inch winchester hard drive, which had a huge 20 megabyte capacity. It had a "fixed" 512 byte sector size. After a little messing around with the drive, I found that the drive really could support larger physical sectors. I went from the 20 megabyte tot disk size to 1024 byte sectors and go another 6 megabytes for a total 26 MB out of a 20 MB drive just by enlarging the sector size.

Overzealous AirTran Boots 9 Passengers Off 1002

An anonymous readerwrites "On Friday the wonderfully customer centric AirTran decided to remove a family of 9 US born Muslims after a comment between two family members regarding how close to the Jet engine they had been seated. The wonderful part is that after the FBI cleared the family 2 hours later, AirTran refused to fly the family, and refused to rebook them on their way from Washington to Orlando, Florida. The family purchased additional tickets on US Airways later that day, after AirTran requested that the irate father be escorted from their booking podiums by security. This whole story highlights the pathetic customer service we are getting from the Airlines these days — they actually treat us like criminals first and ask questions later. Just don't get me started on Delta." It's nice to see that stupidity still knows no bounds.

Defending yourself in court is expensive, and I think the government depends on this fact to convict many of the cases they try. And God help you if you are depending on a public defense attorney in a captial murder charge.

Some people complain that rich people are treated differently under the law, but I suspect that what really happens is that they are rich enough to make the system work like it should.

Changes in HDD Sector Usage After 30 Years 360

freitasm writes "A story on Geekzone tells us that IDEMA (Disk Drive, Equipment, and Materials Association) is planning to implement a new standard for HDD sector usage, replacing the old 512-byte sector with a new 4096-byte sector. The association says it will be more efficient. According to the article Windows Vista will ship with this support already."
