Journal shanen's Journal: Ukrainians will release POWs to their mothers? 8
Doesn't seem to be a good story to Submit to Slashdot, but it's worth a journal entry. The reply below is actually from a different website where I responded to the story. He described it as "God-tier trolling", but I see it as a clever media strategy.
Inviting mothers to retrieve Russian POWs in Ukraine? Yeah, it's a funny story, but it is quite likely that this war of Putin's invasion of Ukraine (and let's not play any word games with "war" and "invasion" versus BS like "special security action" or whatever) is going to be decided by the most effective "media offensives" (and in this case "propaganda" is also a fair label). I don't regard this as trolling, but rather a brilliant way to encourage dissent within Russia.
I think the relative benchmark is actually the pro-Putin pandering of the Fifth Columnists in America praising Putin. Just two examples: Tucker Carlson's questions and TFG's "This is genius" speech. (Tuckfuck was much more offensive, however, with the slightly veiled racism about dog-eating Asians. (I bet Tuckfuck feeds his dog garbage and his dog would taste terrible, to boot. (That's my slightly veiled kick below the belt.))) (There must be a better joke lost somewhere in here involving newspaper columnists who also double as Fifth Columnists working for Putin?)
So returning to the original story, I think Ukraine should ramp up this offensive. And there's an easy way to do it. Ukraine has to help the Russian soldiers disguise it when they surrender, preferably to Ukrainian civilians. Ukraine has to promise that cover stories about how they were captured will be provided for Russian soldiers who just want to surrender and go home. Unfortunately, that won't be sufficient protection against the interrogations by Putin's goons, so Ukraine also has to offer some kind of extended vacation option so the soldiers who surrender can go somewhere else for a few years...
The light bulb just flashed on! Ukraine needs to work out a deal for Russian soldiers to become refugees somewhere. It's too tricky to keep them in Ukraine. They rightly wouldn't feel safe from Putin if they're still in Ukraine, but some other countries could support Ukraine by accepting the Russian soldiers for a couple of years.
"Aye, there's the rub." That "couple of years" really has to be be "until Putin is gone", and Putin doesn't have any safe retirement options that I can detect.
So do you see any way to work out the bugs? On the plus side, I don't think it would be too difficult to find jobs for able-bodied Russians who prefer to surrender rather than murder Ukrainians. Once some host countries have agreed to take them, then it would be easy to explain how to surrender without becoming a war criminal. A little trickier to get the explanation to the Russian soldiers who weren't even told they were invading Ukraine, but I think that part is a solvable communications problem. But on the minus side, the soldiers who surrendered would effectively become long-term political refugees...
Of course, that isn't a problem for Russian soldiers who were captured in combat, so releasing them to their mothers is a good move. But getting the Russian soldiers to surrender before fighting is the best way to end this war. There are very few soldiers who want to become war criminals (even though I'm sure Putin is eager to recruit such bad apples).
