Submission + - US GPS, EU Galileo to work together (reuters.com)

saintory writes: "The US and EU are in talks to allow their separate GPS systems to work together. The future uses would allow enhanced location information based on two readings, among other benefits.

Interesting quote from the article:

"The market probably will drive dual-use receivers. We think probably that single (U.S.) GPS-specific, or Galileo-specific receivers — the market will phase out in time," said Raymond Clore, a GPS-Galileo senior adviser from the U.S. State Department. "It just doesn't make sense to limit yourself to just one system," he told Reuters.

What's interesting to me is that the State Department apparently thinks that two unique satellite systems are fine to work under one unit, so why does another part of the same government disagree?"

Submission + - Wii outselling PS3 in Japan

saintory writes: Apparently the Japanese console consumers are sinking their teeth into the modest Wii and are not as interested in the power-packed PS3. According to the article:
Enterbrain ... said that about 980,000 Wii units had been sold as of the end of 2006, while Sony Computer Entertainment had sold only 460,000 of its PlayStation 3 consoles, signifying a clear win for Nintendo.

Submission + - Prelaunch Wii kiosks only at GameStop

saintory writes: "From GameSpot, looks like GameStop has confirmed that they will be demoing the upcoming Wii. From the article:

"A GameStop spokesman confirmed for GameSpot that the company would have Wii kiosks in stores before the Wii launch but would not confirm that the retail chain would be the only stores to have them. As for when the kiosks would start to arrive in stores, he could only give a "mid-November" time frame. The Wii is scheduled to release in the US November 19.""

Submission + - How the Wii was born

saintory writes: "Ars Technica has an article from a translated interview with Nintendo on how the Wii was born. It's a nice view of what the Nintendo brass might have been thinking when they came up with the system (if not the name). From the article:

"The interview featured Iwata Satoru, Nintendo's president and CEO; Takeda Genyo, the head of development; and engineers Takamoto Jouji, Ashida Kenichiro, and Shiota Kou from the company's various design departments.""
