Comment Equipment manufacturers use NFPA to make money (Score 4, Informative) 226

NFPA code is overly driven by device manufacturers who want to sell expensive devices. The code regularly drives up to the cost of new homes. Some reasonable states have pushed back and exempted some of the nonsense. For example: AFCI breakers - they are very expensive, unreliable, and cause nuisance trips. I know at least one state the stepped up and said AFCI was not required. If we are serious about lowering the cost of housing, there need to be reasonable cost trade-offs. Adding $1000 to the cost of every new home must be offset by how many homes/lives it will actually save.

Comment Fraud Netflix charge - Neflix won't ID account (Score 3, Interesting) 89

I have a Netflix account on one card. Some fraudulent activity started charging a different card. It took . me a while to realize I was paying for my account and for the fraud. I reported the fraud and that card was re-issued. And they continued charging it. Netflix refused to give me the Netflix account info for who was charging even though it was verified to be on my credit card. They told me to cancel the account. I didn't want to do this because it was my main credit card. What a hassle. Netflix acknowledges the fraud but don't help you resolve it. Seems pretty lame they protect the Netflix account that is charged to your card. I went through this process multiple times over a few years until it finally stopped. Netflix was zero help.

It seems to me that there are only 3 things you can do with nuclear waste 1) reprocess it (to reuse some of it) 2) concentrate and contain or 3) dilute and disperse. Yucca is a good place and was well engineered. Nevada lobbied for the site, funding, jobs, roads and infrastructure funds (as did a few other sites) and then when they got the benefits they lobbied against it and shut it down. The arguments for shutting it down were based on fear, not on technical merits. Waste of money. If you get the positives you should not be able to shut it down afterward. Anything is better than storing it at reactor sites. This is a sad political hot button, but the technology to provide a safe storage site is available.

Almost all class action suits like this are scams anyway. The plaintiffs get virtually nothing and the lawyers walk away with millions. And guess who ends up paying to bill... the plaintiffs (consumers) because the costs get passed on to consumers. These lawyers are a drain on society. We need fewer class action lawyers in this country.
