Comment Backblaze (Score 1) 983

If your ISP doesn't have data caps, look at Backblaze ( http://www.backblaze.com/ ). $5 / month for unlimited storage for one computer. Only available for Mac and Windows, but I'm sure a virtual instance of Windows if you're using a Linux box would work... These are the folks that opensourced their hardware design for their storage "pods." http://blog.backblaze.com/2011...

Google Patent Reveals New Data Center Innovations 82

miller60 writes "'Google is seeking to patent a system that provides precision cooling inside racks of servers, automatically adjusting to temperature changes while reducing the energy required to run chillers.' The cooling design uses an adjustable piping system featuring 'air wands' that provide small amounts of cold air to components within a server tray. The cooling design, which could help Google reduce the power bill for its servers, reinforces Google's focus on data center innovation as a competitive advantage. Check out the patent application and a diagram of the system."

Submission + - Chimp found plotting against zoo guests 1

rjshirts writes: In further proof that Planet of the Apes is coming to pass, researchers in Stockholm, Sweden have definitive proof that primates can plan ahead.
From the article: "Santino the chimpanzee's anti-social behavior stunned both visitors and keepers at the Furuvik Zoo but fascinated researchers because it was so carefully prepared.
According to a report in the journal Current Biology, the 31-year-old alpha male started building his weapons cache in the morning before the zoo opened, collecting rocks and knocking out disks from concrete boulders inside his enclosure. He waited until around midday before he unleashed a "hailstorm" of rocks against visitors, the study said."
I think this explains a lot of Cowboy Neal's behavior.......

Researchers Warn of Possible BitTorrent Meltdown 294

secmartin writes "Researchers at Delft University warn that large parts of the BitTorrent network might collapse if The Pirate Bay is forced to shut down. A large part of the available torrents use The Pirate Bay as tracker, and other available trackers will probably be overloaded if all traffic is shifted there. TPB is currently using eight servers for their trackers. According to the researchers, even trackerless torrents using the DHT protocol will face problems: 'One bug in a DHT sorting routine ensures that it can only "stumble upon success", meaning torrent downloads will not start in seconds or minutes if Pirate Bay goes down in flames.'"

Comment College Debt? (Score 5, Interesting) 616

Honestly, the easiest way to avoid debt is to avoid it in the first place. Why do students take out $30k in loans for a school that only costs $6k per semester? It might not be the easiest route, but I worked all through school, and tried to pay off all the debt I could during the deferment periods once I graduated. I can honestly say that I am almost done with a Masters degree and have a total of $3k in debt that will be paid off before I graduate.

Maybe I should sell a book... Then I could pay off that last little bit and move on to pure profit!

Submission + - Beatles and iTunes at last?

rjshirts writes: Ars Technica is reporting that the Beatles and Apple have signed a reported $400 million dollar deal to bring the entire Beatles Catalog to iTunes. From the article: "As of today there is no time frame as to when the catalog will appear online, but it seems to just be a matter of time. McCartney himself even said in November that the catalog would be making its way onto the the store some time in 2008 While we have heard this sort of thing time and time again, this might just be the real deal. Prepare yourself — Beatlemania is coming to iTunes."
