Submission + - Are Academic Journals Obsolete? 1

eggy78 writes: With the ability to get information anywhere in the world in seconds, and the virtually immediate obsolesence of any printed work, why are journals such an important part of academic research? Many of these journals take two or more years to print an article after it has been submitted, and the information is very difficult (or expensive) to obtain. Does this hinder technological advancement? There are certainly other venues for peer review, so why journals? What do they offer our society? Are they just a way to evaluate the productivity of professors? Surely there is a better way. What do the Slashdot readers think?

During some research on surveillance in the London Underground, I learned about efforts there to get people to look at the cameras. A camera was installed at the top of an escalator and a variety of techniques (visual, audio) were tested. It turned out that the most obvious was also the most successful: A simple "psst." The sound was beamed in a directional way by a small speaker located near the camera. Everyone looked. Don't know if it is active use - probably of limited value once people get used to it, but break-ins are "one off" events (or close to it), so you might have success if you coupled it with a motion detector.
