France is a poorer country than a lot of people think. And it's not the exception. Salaries in Spain, Italy are not great either. Honestly, I wasn't for Brexit but the EU has a nasty rap of punishing the south. The financial handcuffs that were put on Greece were completely uncalled for. It's crippled a generation of young people. And it's of little benefit to the rest of EU. Greece is the equivalent of a small state in Germany. I'm curious what would have happened if they had control of their own currency. Similarly, I'm curious how detrimental Brexit will be in the end.

Better salaries would be one good reason to stay. UK salaries are still better than much of Europe. https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.informatics-europe... Fine, you've got your ERC grant for your team for a few years, good for you. Now you're 3 years older and settled down in France with your partner so you want to find a job locally. 37k starting professor salary is not great. Academia is poorly paid considering the skillset. The UK values those skills better financially (unless you live in London which is a money pit).

I'll buy that car, how much? Bear in mind I live in Geneva, so it'll be a bit of a drive to get it here. But now is the time to do it! Not only can you see Russia from Alaska, but you can drive there this time of year. Then it's just a jaunt through Outer Mongolia, Kazakhstan etc., and your here! I'll give ya top dollar!

Well I can tell you that the rest of us at CERN were kept quite in the dark by the management too. There are pictures of the cryo incident which they won't allow to be released.

The LHC is its own prototype. Similar beam related incidents happened at Fermilab. It's shit but it happens, and they handled it dreadfully.

Some big numbers were thrown out there about how much the accident will cost, but in real terms it comes our as a very small fraction compared to overall LHC costs.

Everyone at CERN is very disappointed about it, naturally, but it's up to us now to better prepare ourselves for the new startup.

Ubuntu Linux vs. Mac OS X 479

An anonymous reader writes "An article on InformationWeek pits an Apple user against an Ubuntu Linux user (although he talks about other distros as well) as to which OS makes a better desktop operating system. As might be expected, the conclusion seems to be "different strokes for different folks," but it's interesting to see Microsoft cut (mostly) out of the equation."

The I-Tech Virtual Laser Keyboard 125

avtchillsboro writes, "The NY Times has a rather fluffy article (registration required) about stuff you can buy to 'accessorize' your smart phone & or cell phone (so passé!). What caught my eye was the I-Tech Virtual Laser Keyboard. From the vendor's website: 'The Virtual Laser Keyboard (VKB) uses both infrared and laser technology to generate an invisible field and project a full-size virtual QWERTY keyboard on any surface... The I-Tech VKB reacts exactly like a real keyboard. Direction technology based on optical recognition enables the user to tap the images of the keys, complete with realistic tapping sounds(!), which feeds into the compatible PDA, Smartphone, laptop, or PC. Note: The VKB is both PC and Macintosh compatible!'"
