Especially when you have broken services/daemons sitting in the open running vital public services, you should definitely use multiple layers.

For general users, going beyond the standard windows firewall really isn't that necessary if you have a decent NAT (which I assume most everyone does these days still on ipv4)

Only rely on trust when you need access to things. Don't leave your fly open.

Music Festival Producer Pre-Sues Bootleggers 422

An anonymous reader writes "Apparently, if you even have been *thinking* about bootlegging the Mile High Music Festival this coming weekend in Denver you've already been sued. No joke. Event producer AEG has already filed trademark infringement claims against 100 John Does and 100 Jane Does in anticipation that they're going to bootleg the event. Since none of the sued parties have actually done anything yet, no one's showing up in court to protest the lawsuit either, so it moves forward... meaning that AEG can use it to get all sorts of law enforcement officials (US Marshals, local and state police and even off-duty officers) to go seize bootleg material."

I agree, we should reform education. Example: Take all the money for Physical Education and force people to run outside and get fit normally. Use the surplus in funds and apply it to actual learning classes.

I still don't understand why people think they don't need classes even if they were to become some sort of athlete star. Too bad they didn't take classes to know how slim the odds are of that happening.

For public school situations take that damn football money and use it for science classes.
2nd Hire decent teachers that actually enjoy learning and teaching.
3rd Encourage questions. Ask the students questions, and then wait for a response. Let them actually think! Have some actual communication.

Optional: go places! Take students to new environments to get them to think outside of the box. Science is awesome, you don't have to dress it up to make it fun!

All else fails: Blow shit up! Then explain why it blew up!

Amazon Uses DMCA To Restrict Ebook Purchases 409

InlawBiker writes "Today, Amazon invoked the DMCA to force removal of a python script and instructions from the mobileread web site. The script is used to identify the Kindle's internal ID number, which can be used to enable non-Amazon purchased books to work on the Kindle. '...this week we received a DMCA take-down notice from Amazon requesting the removal of the tool kindlepid.py and instructions for it. Although we never hosted this tool (contrary to their claim), nor believe that this tool is used to remove technological measures (contrary to their claim), we decided, due to the vagueness of the DMCA law and our intention to remain in good relation with Amazon, to voluntarily follow their request and remove links and detailed instructions related to it.' Ironically, the purpose of the script is to make the Kindle more useful to its users."

Lars Ulrich Pirates His Own Album 672

rudeboy1 writes "Lars Ulrich, drummer for Metallica, and long time opponent of file sharing admitted to 'pirating' his own album, Death Magnetic last year. 'I sat there myself and downloaded "Death Magnetic" from the Internet just to try it,' he said. 'I was like, "Wow, this is how it works." I figured if there is anybody that has a right to download "Death Magnetic" for free, it's me.'"

Dude Jack, stay the hell out of Utah. I don't want you polluting our pool of already somewhat interesting people. You've already been disbarred, and no one should ever take you seriously. However, most people don't recognize this and they need to know that you're full of shit. Seriously, Stop trying to ruin everything for everyone. It only takes one, and you're approaching infinity of retardation. Please just go live in some communist nation.

Jack Thompson Attacks DoD, ESA, GTA With Utah Bill 235

eldavojohn writes "Delusional disbarred Miami attorney Jack Thompson claims to have a bill in the state of Utah that targets retailers and entire industries with the Truth in Advertising Law. The best part of his rant: 'Our military appropriately uses violent video games a) to suppress the inhibition to kill of new recruits, and b) to teach killing scenarios. Games have the same effect on civilian teens.' While GamePolitics couldn't find the bill on Utah's state site, they did receive a response from him claiming 'I have a sponsor and a bill, and [the video game] industry is in trouble.' For 2009 bills, there seems to be merely a bill enhancing the Truth in Advertising Law but does not contain any of Thompson's verbiage. Good 'ole Jack — always good for some laughs, but really he needs to give it up one of these days."
