One nice thing about Slashdot is that - so far as I know - user accounts are not subject to being administratively banned. I had taken that liberty for granted.
Recently, I am sad to say, I have come to appreciate* that as a truly excellent feature of this site. I hope I will not take it for granted again.

But, yeah. I can kind of see banning complete spam accounts, but that leaves open the possibility for abuse by people who TPTB to solve their community issues for them. I think most things can really be solved within the community. If the person is really all that bad, well, that's why shunning was invented. No need to involve the Ban Hammer.

Slashdot's journal RSS feed sucks, though; Plaintext journals are dumped straight to RSS, and Google Reader thinks it's HTML. So, with each journal entry, I get thirty or forty sentences without paragraph breaks. Ick.

It is the death of the pseudonym. We're all supposed to 'really be us' and therefore we will take all of this much more seriously, and we will be subject to much more peer pressure to behave and be good little automatons.
And of course, the automatons can't police themselves. Instead, the facebooks and the flickrs of the world have to play judge and jury.
