Comment ELO Rankings (Score 1) 133

Thought I'd list the official ELO Chess rankings for reference:
  1. Mr Blue Sky
  2. Rock And Roll is King
  3. Way Life's Meant to be
  4. So Serious
  5. I'm Alive
  6. Getting to the Point
  7. Don't Walk Away
  8. Turn to Stone
  9. Confusion
  10. Last Train to London

Currently I'm ranked 7th (Turn to Stone - yeah I suck), but managed to beat a 6th ranked player after a close match (luckily he lived up to his title), so I should hopefully rank up soon. Can't wait to meet the Mr Wood and Mr Lynne at the ranking ceremony which is held every month at The Ship Inn, Frimley, UK.

I too was a cynic about Bioshock 2, but then I played it. Have you? I actually thought Bioshock 2 was a fantastic sequel and the multiplayer actually worked really well. They made the multiplayer fit the setting (having it occur during Rapture's collapse) and utilised the Modern Warfare framework of levels, unlocks and challenges, all wrapped up in fantastic presentation in keeping with Rapture. Also the I don't think the single player game suffered at all, it was a superb game that in many aspects was superior to the original in my opinion.

Is underscore_separated really easier than camelCase?

For camelCase, you have to hold down the Shift key.

But for underscore_separated, you have to hold the Shift and hit the underscore key, which another character to type.

I understand that some editors don't stop at the case shift, but many programming editors today do.

Yes, indeed - hence I argue that we shouldn't use terms like "child porn cartoons". You're right, even if one conceded that it was reasonable to use "child porn" to describe a cartoon (which I don't), the problem is still that the laws are far broader than that.

I fear this new law will be even broader than the dubious recent "extreme porn" law, Section 63 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act. The worrying thing is, I don't even think that hentai is some unintended consequence of the law - I've seen references to police forces explicitly mentioning hentai, calling it to be banned (e.g., in the consultation for Section 63, Gtr Manchester Police also called for laws against hentai. And the sad thing is, all we'll see reported in the press is "man convicted of possessing child pornography", with at best a reference to cartoons or drawings (one of the problems with trying to follow the consequences of Section 63 is that details in the press are very limited, and usually follow the Government-spin definitions of "man possessing extreme pornographic images").

doesnt this in some way breach antitrust laws? i mean the fact remains it is the most used platform currently available, and it keeps getting locked down more and more to keep out certain companies, i know its not exactly open source and all, but id say give it 2 or 3 years at this rate and apple will be in the same antitrust boat as M$...

At least Microsoft never prevented you from putting your product on theirs. They just had the tendency to clone your product and give it away free.

But I don't believe Microsoft ever said you HAVE to use VB in order to write an application for Windows. And they never said you had to buy all your software through their store. Or prevent sale of software if they made a similar product.

In comparison. Microsoft was a dirty player when it came to getting their software pre-loaded on PC makers computers. But after that, they were pretty free.

Very interesting, insightful and informative. Thank you.

I'd just like to disagree with you that people are selfish at heart. People are a very social animal. Some time during our evolution, cooperation has given us means to survive. We've evolved empathy and solidarity. Humans have potential for very bad things, but, at heart, I'd say humans are selfless at heart. For the longest part of our (pre-)history, we've lived in small, pretty egalitarian and peaceful groups, gathering and hunting. We even have the capacity to be kind to total strangers. That's rather remarkable among species on this planet.

(Sure, some laissez fairer could say that if helping others makes you feel good, then even selflessness is selfish. To that one could retort that, "ok, but then there is good and bad kinds of selfishness and if you are not selfless-selfish, but selfish-selfish, then you are all about bad selfishness, monsieur laissez-faire-type.)
