Because my desktop isn't a fucking iPhone. It's a business tool that I sit in front of 8.5 hours a day. My iPhone usually sit's in my pocket, only to come out when I'm in the bathroom or otherwise not in front of a computer and I want to entertain myself for a while. Fundamentally, tablets and smart phones are to consume information. Desktops and laptops are to produce information. It makes sense that they have a fundamentally different interface.

Umm, sorry, if my neighborhood has had a rash of burglaries and I saw someone walking around late at night/early morning that isn't from the neighborhood, I'd call the cops. Even if it wasn't raining...and regardless of skin color. Yay, now the cops can stop, question and release if the person actually has business there, or maybe perhaps pop the guy that's been breaking into homes.

*sigh* It's not a "Shoot First" law and the "Stand Your Ground" law, as the facts are known, don't apply. First, SF vs SYG. Stand your ground means you have no duty to run away from an attacker. Suppose a knife wielding maniac is advancing on you...you can shoot him, you don't have to run away (some states require that you attempt to run away before shooting). Or in a home invasion, you can shoot the guy when he breaks through the door, instead of having to retreat to the furthest bedroom (this is also required in some states). There is no such thing as a shoot first law...you make it sound as if you can just pop anyone you don't like. In this case, as far as we know, Zimmerman was already being attacked and taken to the ground after turning to go back to his vehicle. Most of the states in this country would allow you to use deadly force to protect yourself if someone is on top of you and bashing your head into the ground. It has nothing to do with the stand your ground laws and everything to do with self defense.

I did this once (only I sent it via snail mail packet) but then the bank happily sent me the fully filled out application for my signature ... in a pdf ... via email.

I was horrified. My name, my wife's name, our address (past and present), ssn, all my account balances and numbers for every financial thing I own -- every single piece of the most sensitive personal information I have in one convenient package in an unencrypted email.

I sent a very terse message conveying how upset I was that they did this but they literally just said, "We've never had a problem doing it this way."

Needless to say I stopped doing business with that mortgage company.

I think it is sad but without a law I don't see financial institutions changing. Even then just look at how they interpreted the "multi-factor authentication" law ... site key, really?
