Journal nizo's Journal: Gnome + MAYA = fail 7

Ok, first let me start with the solution: I decided to give KDE a try, and the problem I was having went away. I have hated KDE in the past, but the latest version isn't too bad. I could probably get used to it. Ultimately I don't care what I use, as long as it has autoraise for windows.

So here was the problem I was having:

When I would double click on a field in Maya, eventually (usually within seconds) every time I clicked on something afterwards it would act like a double click (even when I was only clicking once). I never noticed this behavior with anything except Maya, so I am not sure I can entirely blame Gnome (and believe me, I double click all the time in Gnome). However KDE doesn't seem to have this problem. Sigh.

Oh and this is all running under the latest (9.04) Ubuntu.

p.s. I am sure you could do it with Gnome, but I noticed there is a Slideshow option for the desktop background built into KDE, with each desktop having an independent setting. Yeah, I think it is time to start gathering my favorite animation images and make a nice little slideshow.

Gnome + MAYA = fail

  • KDE has been my desktop of choice for quite a while - and while the jump to 4 was a little rocky, I think it is pretty awesome now. It's different and it takes a little getting used to those differences, but after that, smooth sailing.

I'm running gnome on my new ubuntu box, because I'm running the machine above all else to learn so I can help others, but it feels kind of antiquated now.

I admit that I am used to where everything is in Gnome, so it will take me a bit to get used to KDE if I decide to switch. However I am liking what I am seeing so far.

It is sad but I really like the slideshow desktop background :-D

  • I'd hope that this is the kind of error they'd look into and fix relatively soon, 'cause I'd be surprised if you were the only one to notice this.

Man, I really do wish I could help out on those kinds of things...I can't tell you the number of times I've wanted to jump into the source code and just FIX stuff that nettled me about a program, or add something. Just all those pesky compiles and re-compiles!

Good luck whichever route you go, and you my sympathies! It was just this kind of thing that got me to t

  • I fiddled a bit with LXDE [lxde.org] and really liked it. I would think, assuming it runs with Maya, that a lighterweight desktop would help,too...
  • Back when Red Hat first included both GNOME and KDE in the '90s, I figured I'd give them a try. I'd been using fvwm for ages.

I tried to fire up GNOME and it just wouldn't work. It'd crash every time while starting. I spent hours messing with it.

I started KDE and it came up right away. No crashes, just worked.

I have preferred KDE ever since.

I think I switched to Gnome when I moved over to Ubuntu; it worked great as that was pretty much the default. Seriously at this point I could work with either one, since they both have what I need to get things done, and neither one makes my eyes bleed (though KDE used to; man it was horrid looking the last time I looked at it, but that was many many years ago).
