Journal nizo's Journal: Looking for screen recording software for tutorials 12

I found software at this site, which might work:

camstudio.org

But I wanted to see what other people are aware of (must be free or really really cheap); basically I want to create simple software tutorials. Must run under Windows; if it also runs on macs and linux that is spiffy, but not required.

Looking for screen recording software for tutorials

  • The best I've seen is Snapz Pro X on OS X. Don't know if there is an equivalent on Windows.

  • You can try http://www.unixuser.org/~euske/vnc2swf/ [unixuser.org] if having a flash file is OK. Since it hooks into VNC, it records the entire desktop, so if you just want one window recorded, you'd have to maximize it and hide any taskbar or other widgets, but the python version will work under multiple operating systems (at least, ones you can install python on)
    • Aaaactually, if you can get it to a flash file, MediaCoder (freeware!) can convert it to a bunch of other useful formats. And on top of working under Windows, MediaCoder doesn't actually require advanced hardware-- I've gotten it working nicely (if more slowly) on legacy machines.

It does have a bit of a learning curve (mainly learning to work with more options than you might want), and the odd bug or two, but it's easily one of the best and most versatile freeware apps I've ever seen.

      Good luck!
  • At first I thought you'd linked to Camtasia Studio... the names are confusingly similar, no doubt intentional. I'm surprised the guy hasn't got a nice C&D letter yet. And is it just me, or does their "History" section sound a bit fishy?

Over the last few months, quite a people have asked me about CamStudio's history and the confusion with the V2.1 that's around, so I thought I'd explain what the situation is, as I understand it ...

CamStudio was originally released by a company called RenderSoft who were subsequently bought by a company called eHelp who used some of the technology in their program, RoboDemo ...

Some time later, eHelp was bought by Macromedia who wanted RoboDemo (which was to become Captivate) ...

Knowing that CamStudio did some of the stuff RoboDemo did for free (mainly export to streaming Flash), it looks like they released a newer version of CamStudio (2.1) which fixed some bugs but most importantly, removed certain features. Gone was the ability to create SWFs, added was the requirement to register to use it, and over time, links to the various webpages that had CamStudio and its source code, became broken.

However, I've managed to find the earlier version 2.0 complete with the related CamStudio video codec (comparable to Techsmith's excellent TSCC), the source code for both and just put the website up so people can download them ...

It makes it sound like some random guy found a copy on some website and decided to publicly release it regardless of its copyright status. Anyway, I may check it out but the above sounds a bit suspicious to me.

Yeah I found the names rather alike as well. Though mostly what I worry about is it might contain malware, which I may just have to live with the risk if I choose the free route :-|
    • Actually, I downloaded a copy of a certain freeware (forgot the name) that used to have a built-in CD ripper and a lot of really nice features for organizing MP3s. It came out during the height of the whole Napster thing (the free downloads part when everybody was sharing their music).

Anyway, I really liked it, but hadn't actually installed it on my home machine (I used it at work just for backround noise since I could rip all my CDs and not have to carry them). As it turns out, I decided to download the
  • I haven't used any of these, so I can't speak to quality, ease of use, etc. But wikipedia has a list of screencasting software [wikipedia.org] that may be of use.
  • I'd say as long as they can find Ctrl, Alt, and Delete; and know where the power button is when the keys are frozen, too; then that's 90% of what you need to show right there;-)

So, yeah, I got nothing. Do you like graphic novels?

      Do you like graphic novels?

Actually I am writing one now, it is called "Sneak Up on Shadow Wrought With a Baseball Bat".

Oh you meant novels with pictures, didn't you? :-)

I have several on my amazon wishlist, but haven't really gotten into one yet (unless you count the comic books that the nerd at work keeps making me read. I think they are called graphic novels now, right?) So is that what you have been up to lately?
  • I've used it for presentations and training and can't recommend it highly enough. I believe they have a 30-day free trial.
    • I have used Camtasia as well and was very impressed. But it is probably not cheap enough for what was requested.
