Journal nizo's Journal: RIP Fred Saberhagen 10

From Slice of Sci-Fi

SF and fantasy writer Fred Saberhagen, born 1930, died June 29, 2007, at the age of 77. He began publishing in 1961 with short stories in Galaxy and If magazines, and published [sic] first book Berserker in 1967, first in a series about interstellar killing machines programmed to destroy all life.

Saberhagen's 60+ books also included the Empire of the East sequence, beginning with The Broken Lands (1968), the Dracula sequence, beginning with The Dracula Tape (1975), and two books co-written with Roger Zelazny, Coils (1981) and The Black Throne (1990). His last book was Ardneh's Sword (Tor, 2006).

The family will announce a date for a Memorial Celebration later this year. Donations would be appreciated to Doctors without Borders, Catholic Relief, SFWA Emergency Medical Fund, and John 23rd Catholic Church in Albuquerque.

  • Another one from whom there will be no more books. That is, unless he manages the L. Ron Hubbard trick of writing after death.

The Berserker books were the first I read of him, but I also liked the "Dracula" books. Coils was also quite good. Actually, I liked pretty much everything that he wrote.
    • I hate to admite that I haven't read any of his books yet. I'll add him to the list of books to find.

Was he a local guy to you Nizo?

Yeah he lived here in town apparently. I was already kicking myself for not seeing him a few years back at a local convention. Now my hopes of catching him at a future convention are dashed as well :-|

Except for that FInal Convention in the sky. Not that I'd rush to make it to that one...

I am looking forward to meeting Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, Fred Saberhagen, and all the other great authors that are already there and will be there by the time I arrive. I am betting the lines will be hellishly(hehe) long.
            • Poor Mark Twain. I imagine he must think he's been transferred to Hell when all the Trekkers arrive and start asking him what it was like to be on ST:TNG;-)
        • That sucks.. and here I just finished rereading the Swords trilogy.

The later sword books are good too (something like seven of them or so). Don't be confused like I was however: they start numbering from one on up; they are "The Lost Swords" series or something like that, and take place after the last of the trilogy books.
  • Better get off my ass and write that berserker story I've got in my head. It's derivative as hell, but it would make a nice comic or bland movie...
  • By no means my alltime favorite, but a solid writer. Will be missed. Vance is also close to ejecting.

Uncompensated overtime? Just Say No.

Working...
