Journal nizo's Journal: My thoughts on "Smart Bacon" 32

In my quest to find healthy bacon, I decided to give Smart Bacon a try. Basically it is kinda like bacon, only a 10th of the fat and none of the taste. Strike that, it sorta tastes like what I would imagine the wrapper that real bacon comes in would taste like. I mentioned to the SO that it might taste better mixed with something else and she said, "yeah, like a pound of real bacon".

So much for faux-bacon (or my favorite made up name: facon (prounounced "fake-un"; rhymes with bacon)). Turkey bacon is still the closest I have gotten.

My thoughts on "Smart Bacon"

  • that stuff is disgusting. try morningstar farm's bacon. of course it has been nearly 18 years since i've had dead-animal bacon, mf's version is quite tasty. also yves canadian bacon [yvesveggie.com] is marvelous.

Seconded! Yves makes some pretty tasty stuff all around we find.
    • I haven't tried MF's bacon, but I can vouch for their "sausage" products. The Yves ground meat substitute is also very yummy. When making burritos we'll cook beans on the stove, mix in some cheese, sour cream and hot sauce (as needed, appropriate), and then a pack of Yves. Good stuff.

Of course when your wife makes homemade carnitas the Yves gets the heave-ho;-)

      • Does the wifey eat Burning Halo Hot Sauce(TM) too?
        • She'll occasionally have a little of the "Green" Burning Halo, but she really likes the "Red" stuff. Not as hot and a lot more flavor (mainly because it was the midseason sauce so the peppers were riper;-).
    • I prefer live animal bacon!
  • I once at a pound of bacon by myself in one sitting. Suffice to say, I rarely eat a whole lot of bacon anymore.....

Ok I could see feeling that way after eating a pound of RAW bacon, but I can easily finish off a pound of cooked bacon if I'm hungry (and especially if they are in BLTs) ... mmmm BACON.
      • Finishing it wasn't the problem. Eating a pound of greasy bacon, though, does some funky stuff to your digestive tract. And having IBS probably didn't help...
        • by ces ( 119879 )
Oh, I forget sometimes that many of the people around here have somewhat delicate digestive tracts.

BTW the RoF was very happy the day I ate the pound of bacon.
  • Seriously - best thing you can do is wrap it in paper, pop it in a drained plastic tray in the microwave, and drain off all the lost fat.

The act of burning it changes some of the fat to more dangerous stuff.

Realize that, by eating bacon, you're TRYING to eat more fat. Accept it. Accept no substitutes, but only cook it when you want it and only eat as much as satisfies the urge. If you want a better choice, try Canadian back bacon - used to eat that myself for years in Vancouver BC.

      Yes ... agreed.

And if you are going to eat bacon you might as well get the really good stuff, nice artisan bacon or the Applewood Smoked Bacon from Niman Ranch. My personal favorite is Hempler's Bacon from B&B Meat and Sausage in Bellingham, WA.
      • agreed, although I prefer either alder-smoked bacon or maple-smoked bacon, preferably organic.
        • by ces ( 119879 )
The Hempler's is alder-smoked. I don't think it is organic though. OTOH it is relatively cheap ($7.99-$9.99/20oz package) and easy to find, at least in the Seattle area.

As for the Niman Ranch bacon, I only mention it because it was considered the best tasting of the six mail-order bacons the Cook's Illustrated staff recently tasted.
  • And cut off the fat? It seems to work for getting around my pork allergy at least. Problem is then you have to *add oil* for cooking, but at least it can be Olive Oil or Canola.
    • by ces ( 119879 )
At that point you might be better off starting with Canadian back bacon.

Even with a meaty bacon anything made from side-pork is going to have a lot of fat that needs removing.
  • *baconated* grapefruit? ADMIRAL crunch?!
  • ate a lot of turkey bacon and prefer it. I mean the fat is 1/2 of bacon (or more) and that just makes me a little queasy.

  • Bacon is one of the best things about being on top of the food chain.

If God didn't mean for us to eat pigs, why did he make them out of bacon?

  • the ultimate /. journal entry post is anything on the topic of food. Post it at a reasonable time so that a few hours later everyone will be in their afternoon slump thinking about anything but work or their empty stomach and there it is, the ultimate /. je post. in reference to nizo's post, that's hilarious. bacon is just about worthy of worship. mmmmm, bacon.

Hehe I made that image while I was starving after surgery last month. I should make it nicer, but alas am too lazy (though I am still craving bacon :-) )
  • I like it. Kinda weirds me out though - I'm guessing they puree some turkey jiggly bits and form it into bacon shaped strips with bacon flavoring?

Whatever - it is lower in fat, and tastes fine. That's good enough for me.

New systems generate new problems.
