Journal nizo's Journal: Ahhhhh the snow is disrupting my art!!! 5

Ok so we get a boatload of snow on our flat roof, which of course causes a leak right near my precious computer a few days ago. I hastily move said item as far away as I possibly can, and cry that my computer ended up in a pile in a room that has no internet access :-(

Fast forward to tonight, where I finally get motivated to work on things. I now have my new nifty PC setup, with raid(!) and a few old trays (for backing up to a couple of removeable drives) finally installed. The raid card and trays have been sitting in a box for ages; it is nice to have them finally in use. Wow, I will actually be able to make backups and save my data in the event of a minor disaster! Part of my motivation to fix all this was certainly caused by a vision of losing everything on my PC because of a water drip (art, pictures, writing). That would suck so very bad. The problem is it is hard to work on this crap all day, and then come home and deal with it. I just wanna draw, not putz with hardware.

I still have to figure out how to deal with network access, but on the upside I also got the wireless working on my crappy old Linux laptop (which amusingly enough I was able to use as a router to allow my computer to connect to the internet). I do have a wireless dongle coming for the new 'puter, so I think for now I will mostly abandon the scary leaky room (even though I believe I have fixed the leak). Hopefully I can start working on the art again a bit before school cranks up next week. Or maybe I will install a wiki and start organizing all this computer stuff I have been accumulating for the past ten years.....

I'll remember you this summer when the high here is 98 degrees with 20% humidity :-) Especially when I fire up my evaporative cooler and picture you sitting in a room, feeling like you are wrapped in wet towels :-D And don't forget the cool summer nights, when the temps drop down to comfy desert levels.

We usually get a light dusting of snow here in the city, so this is pretty crazy. This place still has some of the best weather around, even with the occasional blizzard thrown in.

  • It's January and we still don't have any snow - almost unheard of and it truly SUCKS.
  • is it cheaper to buy RAID and junk, or fix the roof? :)

Heh, well the nice thing about RAID and stuff is a) it is mostly hardware that I have already accumulated (like the RAID card was from a now defunct side business, and I have who knows how many old IDE drives from various older outdated machines). A large part of the problem is I haven't been properly motivated to install and configure it all. Nothing like a nice scare to remind me what life would be like without all my files. After plunking down some cash for a few removeable trays, it is certianly cheaper
