Journal nizo's Journal: My wine picks (from "Shoot in the air like a hick!" eve) 8

First let me just mention I only drink red wine, so if you were hoping to find a new white wine, so sorry to disappoint you. I tried three new wines this past holiday, and here they are in order of preference:

Timberwood Cabernet Sauvignon: Damn good wine for less than $6. Very smooth. This was the last wine I tasted, so I could have been influenced by my inebriated state, therefore I will need to re-verify this exquisite wine again later tonight.

Yellow Tail Shivaz-Cabernet: Not bad, but not as smooth as the Timberwood. I can't recall what I paid for it, but it was less than $8.

Golden Gate Merlot: This was on sale for $2 or $3, and tasted like a $1 bottle of wine. It was better than a bottle of turpentine (like the Sutter Home brand of wine, blech), but I would rather splurge the extra $3-$4 for the Timberwood for sure. I have a Cabernet Sauvignon from these guys that I will have to try, but the flavor of the merlot doesn't bode well for this other bottle, which may instead end up being used for cooking at a later date.

  • Gotta disagree with you there. I put it right down there with our pal Kendall Jackson.

For a Cab under $20, I recommend something from Chile or Argentina.

    • The problem with South American wines is, unless you know exactly what to buy, you can easily spend $15 on something that tastes like Two Buck Chuck. Also, a lot of South American Vintners have yet to master that year over year repeatability that you get from an established French or Californian house.

I've almost given up on finding a good, cheap Cab (or a Chardonnay for that matter). Columbia Crest had a nice "drink-now" Cab last year (forget the vintage) for under $15.

I've become a big fan of California
    • Well don't get me wrong, I have had some $40 wines that were waaaay better :-) Though the wines I usually get at are less than $10. Yeah I am pretty cheap, though for extra special occasions I would splurge. Plus there aren't piles of places that have a decent wine selection that I frequent. However New Years depleted the wine cellar (i.e. little metal rack thingy) so maybe I will put in some extra effort and go somewhere with a decent selection. Do you have any specific wines you like?

Lots of great deals in Aussie wine these days. I've had some really good stuff (better than the Yellow Tail) for dirt cheap.

  • I don't know whether you drink cask wine at all: here in Australia some of it is really, really good value for money: I recommend Banrock Station [banrockstation.com] and Yalumba [yalumba.com] (unfortunately, I have become allergic to both and I consider that proof positive that Sod's Law is still alive and kicking) in all their grape varieties. These would be around AU$15 for a 2 litre cask. And I am happy to go on record stating that the wine you get is at least (look at those italics: I really mean it!) worth as much as a wine costing AU$
  • Do you have a Trader Joe's near you that stocks wine? I was at a dinner party in CA a year or two ago where some people stopped off there and brought some $2-3 bottles that were absolutely excellent. I was astounded.
    • There is one that is being built and will be open any day now; considering how many people at work have brought it up in our weekly meeting I am sure I will know the minute it opens :-)
      • They don't all sell wine (the one nearest me doesn't) but they are remarkable in many other ways. I typically prefer their coffee over that at Costco for bang for the buck, and they have a lot of other good stuff at very decent prices. Enjoy!
