Journal Journal: 15 Moderator Points, Again.

I have 15 points once again. I'm guessing this is a change in the code AND a bug with my uid as I also saw a reply to my initial journal entry on my first 15 mod. points in which another user got 15 as well. Oddly, I could not respond directly to that comment as the system isn't allowing comments any more on that journal post (there is a time limit on journal comments? comments "archived", hmm, that sucks) so I created this entry for potenti

Journal Journal: 15 Moderator Points? 1

Now, I must admit, I've twice before gotten 10 moderator points at a time. At which time, I had gone looking to find out if this was indeed a /. bug or some new moderation code. I did come across another slashdot user journal at that point (which I can't seem to find again now unfortunately) that mentioned that they too received 10 points as well as a few comments to the same effect. However, no one seemed to know where the additional points that we were seeing came from.

Comment Realtime Ray Tracing and Multicore CPU's (Score 4, Interesting) 143

Despite what some major 3D game engine creators have to say if real-time ray tracing comes sooner than later, at about the time an eight core CPU is common, I think we might be able to do away with the graphics card especially considering the improved floating point units going in next gen. cores. Consider Intel's QuakeIV Raytraced running at 99fps at 720P on a dual quad-core Intel rig at IDF 2007. This set-up did not use any graphic card processing power and scales up and down. So, if you think 1280x720 is a decent resolution AND 50fps is fine you can play this now with a single quad-core processor. Now imagine it with dual octo-cores which should be available when? Next year? I hazard 120fps at 1080P on your (granted) above average rig doing real time ray tracing some time next year IF developers went that route AND still playable resolutions and decent fps with "old" (by that time) quad-cores.

Journal Journal: On the GMail Storage Capacity (Past, Present and Future)

On seeing the recent increase in storage that GMail is making available to its users, I went digging for more details and potentially for some more concrete information as to what users could expect in their web mail storage futures. The following report details the odd and somewhat disturbing information that I actually uncovered.

Now, the ongoing storage-per-web-mail-account counter on the Gmail home page...

Tech Trendspotting For The Future 59

Dylan Knight Rogers writes to mention a CNN article about an annual 10-year forecast of tech trends. Lots of analysts produce forecasts, but the Institute of the Future goes one step further by crafting artifacts from the future: "mocked-up products claiming to be from, say, 2009. You might go to an IFTF presentation and see baskets of finessed fruit that promise cognitive enhancement. Or you might wake up in the hotel where the IFTF seminar was being held to find your newspaper dated 10 years hence."
