  • "but because guys in the tech field are starting to act like morons/jerks"

Speaking as a guy, I can tell you that we really are morons and jerks. We're not exclusive to the tech sector either, so be careful. Of course theres always exceptions if you look for them, but how hard you look is up to you. You can only put up with the majority so long, and the majorty realy does suck. Maybe I'm just bitter, but it's how I feel. (And no, I dont exclude myself. I think I suck as much as everyone else, just in diffe
    • Eh. There was always negativity and a fair share of morons/jerks in the tech sector. They've just been coming out of the woodwork in every direction lately. And seem to be prevalent on Slashdot.

The mindless filler part of Slashdot is still there for me. I'm just not reading the comments anymore- unless they're made by people I've previously marked as friends, those still interest me.

I'm hanging out more on kuro5hin and a variety of IRC channels instead. It's just more pleasant. =]

      • The friends system can be used nicely for that if you make friend bonus +5 and set everything else to not matter, then just use a high enough threshold.

IRC is definitly nice to, Much easier to control.
Still a bunch of random jerks, but they're much easier to kick/ban/ignore. (I know, Running irc.goatse.cx is kind of asking for it, but whatever)

IRC also is more relaxed, which makes the filler part easier. You can just idle in a bunch of chnanels/servers occasionaly throwing in your 2 cents without the nee
  • I understand your feeling. Perhaps you should try sites for more mature people, like Kuro5hin [kuro5hin.org] and Linux Weekly News [lwn.net]. Consider keeping the same nick as the act of defiance. Be yourself. Don't let morons force you to change your individuality. I wish you the best.
    • I have to agree on the recommendation of k5 as a mature place to get a news fix. The problem with k5 is that the "We're not slashdot!" attitude means they never cover the same stories. I come to slashdot for the subject matter, not the maturity of the discourse (though I occasionally get an unexpected surprise). I imagine it's not going to be much different elsewhere, since the subjet matter precludes certain expectations of social aptitude. Not to troll, just a fact of geeky life.

      It's sad to see anyon
      • The problem with slashdot is its software. Idiots can talk to each other. Make posts with score 0 and below invisible to "anonymous cowards", and most idiots will go away.

Also, the "deficit moderation" is a problem. Scarcity of modpoints encourages positive moderation and leaves stupid comments with high score received before somebody debunked them.

K5 has a much better moderation system, but the users don't seem to be very interested in technical topics. It would be great if somebody set up another Scoo

        • Its funny, but I feel the same way about posting to K5... I consider myself to be (arguably) not too dull-witted... but for some reason I'm always beaten to the punch by someone able to articulate my ideas better than myself. I suppose it just saves me the bother. :)
        • I'm not a big fan of the format of K5, although I've been trying to transfer my "Slashdot daily fix" to K5, I'm finding it falling flat. There's something open and accessable about /. that just doesn't seem to exist with K5. Odd, I suppose, but. It's not necessarily that I don't feel qualified to post. More so that I don't feel compelled to. K5 just feels like less of a community site than /., and is definitely lacking in the tech area--which is the area I'm most interested in.

I think that a hybrid betwe
      • Sorry, I hate K5. Too self-important. Sometimes the stories are good, but in my experience the scoop moderation system promotes severe groupthink and discourages funny shit.

If you like politics, come on over to plastic [plastic.com] and join the debates. It's pretty libby-lib, but there are enough right-wingers and general wingnuts there to keep it fun.

  • Lately I've been thinking of just saying "Screw IT" and getting the hell out of the technology field... But then I realized something. That would be pretty fucking female of me, wouldn't it?

So, leaving the technology field would be female of you, but leaving Slashdot wouldn't?

It's pretty foolish to hang out on Slashdot and expose myself to this sort of annoyance.

You think this sort of annoyance only exists on Slashdot?

Nah, I'm not being one of those ditzy cry-baby girls who screams 'sexism!' at eve
    • Leaving the technology field would be female of me, leaving slashdot wouldn't. Why? Simple. "Community" is not a reason to leave something you love which exists independently of the community (ie: Technology/computers). I don't "love" Slashdot, and all that there is to it is the community. I mean. If I want just news, I'd go elsewhere. So. Yeah. Leaving Slashdot isn't overly female. Unless I try to throw a farewell party and send out pink invitations. ;)

As for this type of annoyance only existing on Slas

Gotcha. I would say that there is a bit more to Slashdot than community, or perhaps there are different facets to the community and one can enjoy some without buying into all - for example, seeing truly insightful comments in response to an article is something you won't get at a lot of other news sites, and o
  • Frankly, I'm assuming you know who you are and you have nothing to prove, so who gives a flying fuck what your detractors have to say?

FWIW, you are on my friends list due to the content of what you have had to say, rather than the implied gender associated with your handle.

My idea of roughing it turning the air conditioner too low.
