Submission + - Munich Council say talk of LiMux demise is greatly exaggerated (omgubuntu.co.uk)

ndogg writes: The rumors of Munich city going back to Microsoft seem to have been greatly exaggerated. There was a review of the city's IT systems that was called for by the mayor, but it wasn't solely just to decide on whether to move back to Microsoft. And while there have been complaints about LiMux, they mostly seem to concern compatibility with OpenOffice.org, which may well be resolved by switching to LibreOffice.

Submission + - Mozilla is considering revoking TeliaSonera trust for sales to dictators (theregister.co.uk)

ndogg writes: Mozilla is considering pulling TeliaSonera from its list of root certificate SSL providers. They have asked for comments on this on their mailing list. They're concerned about the use of the certificates by those governments for spying on its citizens, particularly in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan — where TeliaSonera operates subsidiaries or is heavily invested. Mozilla's concern is that TeliaSonera has possibly issued certificates that allow hardline government servers to masquerade as legitimate websites — so-called man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks — and decrypt web traffic. This alleged activity would contradict Mozilla's policy against "knowingly issuing certificates without the knowledge of the entities whose information is referenced in the certificates".

Submission + - Netflix can now run on Linux (iheartubuntu.com)

ndogg writes: "Netflix has been released on Linux...sort of. The folks at iheartubuntu have figured out a way to get Netflix to run on the Windows version of Firefox using Wine (with a number of custom patches) and Silverlight. They plan on releasing packages for it all soon. Currently, it seems they have only had success with 32 bit while compiling for 64 bit is tricky."

Submission + - Lenovo CEO gives his $3M bonus to 10k workers (dailytech.com)

ndogg writes: "Lenovo CEO, Yang Yuanqing, has decided to give his $3,000,000USD to his workers instead of keeping it. Those 10,000 employees include receptionists, production line workers, and assistants. That works out to about 2,000 yuan or $300 per employee which is about a month's worth of salary."

Submission + - Santorum calls liberals anti-sciencehttp://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/02/20/santor (rawstory.com)

" rel="nofollow">ndogg writes: "Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum charged on Monday that President Barack Obama and Democrats were “anti-science” because they refused to exploit the Earth’s natural resources to the limits of technology. Over the weekend the candidate had been criticized for saying that President Barack Obama followed a theology that was not “based on the Bible.” He later insisted that he was talking about the president siding with “radical environmentalists.”"

Submission + - Open source project name: new low and controversy (zdnet.com) 1

ndogg writes: "The open source Python projects Pantyshot and Upskirt have caused quite a stir within the Python community, and catalyzed the leaving of one of their developers (a woman who's native language is not English.) The original developer Frank Smit has renamed Pantyshot to Misaka, but that too has suspect etymology, as Violet Blue points out."

Submission + - EFF co-founder faces copyright heavyweights at eG8 (arstechnica.com)

ndogg writes: "EFF co-founder, and Grateful Dead lyricist, John Perry Barlow faced down copyright heavyweights the likes of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Jim Gianopulos of 20th Century Fox, and French Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterand. He was on a panel he described as "the Lions Den" discussing issues of intellectual property, and he was the lone dissenting voice on the panel. Mitterand had commented that copyright debates had grown so calm now that everyone agreed upon the ground rules. Barlow shook things up for once."

Submission + - Need a receipt on taxes? The Federal Tax Receipt (whitehouse.gov)

ndogg writes: "The White House has opened up a tool that lets you see where your tax dollars are being spent. I put my numbers in and it showed that a little over a quarter goes towards defense and military spending (I'm not sure I'm getting my money's worth on that one), and a little under a quarter for health care."

Submission + - Texas bill outlaw discrimination of creationists (scienceblogs.com)

ndogg writes: "There is a Texas bill, HB 2454, proposed by Republican State Rep. Bill Zedler, that will outlaw discrimination against creationists in colleges and universities. More specifically, it says, "An institution of higher education may not discriminate against or penalize in any manner, especially with regard to employment or academic support, a faculty member or student based on the faculty member's or student's conduct of research relating to the theory of intelligent design or other alternate theories of the origination and development of organisms.""

Submission + - Mazda recalls car due to spiders (usatoday.com) 1

ndogg writes: "Mazda has decided to recall 52000 2009 and 2010 Mazda6 cars due to spider infestations. Apparently it's because of "a certain type of spider [the Yellow Sac spider]...may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line and this may cause a restriction in the line." This one certainly could not be blamed on the driver, but it's strange nonetheless."
