Journal ncc74656's Journal: Paper Thief Update 5

(Background info is here.)

I printed out some flyers on the color laser printer at work yesterday and taped them up last night on the mailboxes, the gates in front of all of the dumpsters, and the pool gates. When I left to go to work this morning, I noticed that most of them had been taken down. While I was out to lunch, I stopped in at OfficeMax and picked up a pack of full-page labels. Those should stick around a little bit longer. (Labels. Stick around. I kill me. :-) )

The paper didn't arrive until 5 this morning. I got up at 4:30 to see if it had arrived yet, but it hadn't. I started watching the live video and half-watched/half-dozed until the paper arrived. When it did, I brought it inside, stuck a flyer in an old (but still unread) paper, and put it out as bait. Rather than wait for the thief, though, I just crashed until my usual wakeup time.

The "bait" paper was still outside when I left for work. Given that most of the flyers were taken down, I think the thief may have gotten the message. He still needs more shame and humiliation, though, which is why I bought the labels. They go up this evening.

BTW, infrared illuminators apparently are only useful in total darkness. They won't brighten up a scene shot primarily with visible light. That went back to Fry's. A more powerful light (a 100W-equivalent CF) should do the trick instead.

(If you're in the market for a color laser printer, the HP Color LaserJet 3800DN kicks ass. 20 ppm in both B&W and color, 160 MB RAM, built-in PostScript, built-in duplexer, and a built-in print server with a web interface and the ability to send you mail (which could go to your cellphone) when toner is running low, when it's jammed (though ours hasn't jammed yet), or if a luser decides to poke around inside it. Ours is driven by a CUPS server on a Linux box, so it behaves well with Linux.)

The spec sheet [hp.com] says 12.5 seconds, which sounds about right. When it's first switched on (or after you replace a toner cartridge), it'll take a couple of minutes or so to get ready, but after that, it can wake up from sleep mode fairly quickly. We just leave ours on all the time.

It's a condo development. It turns out that there was something in the CC&Rs against it, but that's being overlooked by the HOA. See the next update [slashdot.org] for the explanation.
