Submission + - 750 MW PG&E Battery On Fire in California (apnews.com)

sfcat writes: Hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate and part of Highway 1 in Northern California was closed when a major fire erupted Thursday afternoon at one of the world’s largest battery storage plants.

As the fire sent up towering flames and black smoke and showed no sign of easing by Thursday night, about 1,500 people were instructed to leave Moss Landing and the Elkhorn Slough area, The Mercury News reported.

The Moss Landing Power Plant, located about 77 miles (about 124 kilometers) south of San Francisco, is owned by Texas-company Vistra Energy and contains tens of thousands of lithium batteries. The batteries are important for storing electricity from such renewable energy sources as solar energy, but if they go up in flames the blazes can be extremely difficult to put out.

“There’s no way to sugar coat it. This is a disaster, is what it is,” Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church told KSBW-TV. But he said he did not expect the fire to spread beyond the concrete building it was enclosed in.

And herein is the problem. None of the sites mentioned run off of a single server, they run in server farms typically called CDNs (Content Data Networks). So you can whitelist slashdot but without also whitelisting each of its CDNs slashload won't load. To make matters even worse most CDNs are dynamic meaning your traffic may hit CDN01 to start with and the next request it hits CDN02 and so on. Oh by the way, the same CDNs hosting slashdot could also be hosting the trackers from what ever site so if you do decide to whitelist a particular CDN you've also white listed the tracker. This is just scratching the surface of how complicated the underlying infrastructure is.

It takes skill to write a scientific paper that is easy to understand yet maintain the meaning of the topic being presented. Its not impossible but exceeding difficult the more esoteric the topic is. That being said, it seems more and more published papers seem to be short on actual information and instead are filled with enough stuff to make it appear to be worthwhile.

Submission + - Google's new Pixel File has serious durability issues (youtube.com)

mprindle writes: JerryRigEverything known for in-depth testing of phones and other devices has finished his test of the new $1,800 Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The device failed so poorly, one of the batteries started to overheat. He also noted that the footnotes say the device is rated IP68 yet the Sim tray is rated at IPx8.

Comment Re: Charging, range, price, endurance (Score 1) 430

A lot of your thoughts were the same as mine. We are considering a plugin hybrid to make up for the current shortfalls, lack of charging infrastructure, range anxiety and you introduce a new concept I hadn't thought of endurance. In an ICE vehicle we still have to consider range but with a full EV range now gets coupled with endurance. The more miles put on the vehicle causes the max to decrease. I agree that today's battery tech seems constrained, but look 5 - 10 years in the past and the developments and improvements have been staggering. Looking at what is "in the lab" there are some more major leaps to be had.
