I'm not sure how large your 720p LCD screen is but I've done some A/B testing of the same movie between blu-ray and dvd on my 56" 1080p LCD at normal viewing distance and the improvement is quite noticeable. Even though there is noticeable improvement in picture sharpness I find the color depth to be the main thing I appreciate.

That said movie production quality is a big factor also. For example on blu-ray you can clearly see how some of the non-cgi scenes in Transformers look grainy most likely do them trying to punch up the light of shots made in low light with lenses that were too slow.

Comment Apple & "Green" Macbooks (Score 1) 165

Apple calls their new unibody Macbooks "the greenest Macbook ever". That might be true relatively speaking.

But what Apple don't tell you is that they routinely ship units backwards and forwards across the Pacific Ocean in an attempt to prioritise for US demand.

For example, a New Zealand Apple retailer told my associate that Apple will often recall all NZ stock back to the USA if they run low on stock there. So this means the "green" Macbook you buy in, say, New York City may have flown across the Pacific at least once, maybe even twice or more. I wonder if new stock in NZ comes from California or somewhere in South-East Asia?

It's interesting because Apple make the point that their smaller packaging requires less aircraft space and therefore less aviation fuel - but if they send these things backwards and forwards around the planet, what good is that really?

The annoying thing for New Zealand customers is that the entire country can suddenly run out of stock even though the demand is there but nobody has been able to buy one.

As much as I dislike Vista, I've 'downgraded' my laptop which came with Vista to XP, I can't see how this is entirely Microsoft's fault.

SSDs are new to the scene and still today are not anywhere near the commonplace. Vista has been out for a while now, how could they have optimized for SSDs and why would you spend the resources, perhaps delaying the already massively delayed OS for a niche market.

It sounds to me that SanDisk is trying to divert the blame a little. I would want my SSD to outperform a HDD under any workload no matter what OS it is running under.

SanDisk QQ and fix your product then take these dinosaur spinning disk manufacturers down.:)
