Submission + - Linksys stopping encrypted VoIP calls?

mellowinottawa writes: "I own a few Linksys and Sipura (now owned by Linksys) VoIP devices, both analog telephone adapters (ATAs) and hardphones. They all supposedly support encrypted calls between Linksys devices but there is no way to make them do this without creating a public/private key pair (obviously) but the tool to create this is not released to end users and when I asked Linksys about it via e-mail they said only service providers have access to it. I also see a review http://www.voipsyndicate.com/reviews/Linksys_SPA92 1/index3.html of one of the phones that I have that mentions this, so it's not just me who can't make it work. Does anyone know why Linksys is doing this, is it a legal issue, is it because the big service providers out there like Vonage ask them not to release the tool or it is something worse? Seems like false advertising to me as well since the phone clearly can not perform as advertised for the end user. Thanks, John"
