I left for the fediverse during the 3rd party app purge and I can say the grass is greener on the other side. Were also trying to fix the communication issues with new users being overwelmed by which instance to choose and having to set up their own filters. Just pick an instance, if you dont like it, make an account on one you do.

There are a bunch of projects that mimic larger platforms, Mastodon looks like the artist formerly known as Twitter, Lemmy mimics Reddit, Pixelfed is Instagram at home and, Loops tried to emulate TicTok without the spyware.

[raises hand] I live in the Fediverse (Lemmy and Mastodon), its nice once you build your own block list. There is a growing sentiment that major platforms are intentionally toxic and while the Fediverse does not completely fix that, you have a lot more control over the content you see. Plus, if you dont like your own instances moderation policies, you are free to set up your own.

Federated, Decentralized, Encrypted chat platform. It hits all the buzz words for open-source bingo. I set up a personal instance in my home lab a few days ago and its quite nice.

What's this? A rare species of bees having their land stolen by a large tech corporation? My Endangered Species act of 1973 should put a stop to that!

Its a collection of self-hosted, usually open-source, federated social media platforms. They for the most part use Activity Pub as their underlining protocol so that platforms can communicate with each other to distribute the load of hosting social media instead of relying on a monolithic tech company to do all the hosting.

Im personally on Lemmy.World (federated Reddit clone) and its honestly a much healthier experience than Reddit but it lacks niche communities. Im hopeful for the Fediverse, but so far its really only populated by the tech-literate socially conscious crowd or extremely political fringes that are persona non grata elsewhere, with very little in between.

I feel like the new cyber security words are all made up by CompTIA so to sell people new Security+ text books.

I stand corrected, he did actually found this company, (unlike many of the others he flouts) so says Wikipedia. Still does not change that its success is despite the actions of its founder and not because of it.

Anyway.

As much as I don't like him either, I fully support all space program stuff the company he purchased does. Mostly due to the hope that one day he may take that trip to mars, the moon or where ever and not come back.

I agree, but it provides peace of mind to be able to reach your gremlins anywhere. I'm interested to see if this causes there to be a market for the Nokia 3310 (because that would be funny).

So... does this mean an old Nokia is fine? There is a legitimate need for parents to be able to use modern communication to contact their spawn, so I can understand why everyone has been resistant to policies like this for a while (despite everyone also knowing you probably shouldn't give a 5th grader a smartphone). I wonder if this policy will create an artificial market for ancient phone models, that may be tricky with the old 2G and 3G networks no longer being available.

Lets see how this works out.
