Comment Will fail because Xcode. (Score 1) 16

This will not succeed because of being based on Xcode. Currently if I wanted to use AI assisted coding I could switch with zero friction between Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, Firebase Studio, and a few others because all of them are based on VS Code and when I switch I can bring over all of my settings and most extensions. But this thing is based on Xcode so if I wanted to try it there would be a learning curve. Also based on my experience talking to many devs, Xcode is not exactly the most loved IDE out there. Maybe this thing could work for native iOS developers who are already forced to use Xcode anyways, but that's a relatively small minority based on what I've seen because so many companies are using React Native etc. At the end of the day, most dev teams adopt VS Code to the point that most internal training and tooling often assumes that's what you're using.

Submission + - Raymond Chen about needing to reboot a tootbrush

So you're trading 5 years of your life[1] in exchange for not having to pass background checks. Wow that's a hell of a deal you got there. Keep paying for some CEO's new yacht, that'll do. Funny thing is, I got my firearm license no problem, even with background checks in place. Just don't commit crimes and you'll be fine, it's not that hard.

Main as in most screen time - Linux because it powers our home theatre and it's pretty much always on if someone is home (mostly used for music streaming and watching videos)

Main as in what I use at work - it's a tie between WIndows (my gaming PC now also used for work when I WFO) and Mac (work laptop) apparently my company will remove the BYOD policy so I will go back to Mac only

Main as in personal usage - also a tie between Windows (same gaming PC mentioned above) and Mac (personal laptop) - it all depends if I need to be mobile or not, for example I run MainStage on my MacBook when I play with my band, but I use my PC when recording music at home. For gaming I just use my PC because not much of my Steam library can run on Mac.

Main as in most run time - Linux because we have 2 home mini servers that run 24/7

As I said above, it's a wild guess and I might be wrong.
However, if you look at recent news related to tech and US-China relations, you have to admit that today's political climate presents the perfect conditions for a DJI ban and that would probably receive bipartisan support.
So, it's not that unlikely IMHO

Many years ago I used to be a journalist. My guess is that in America there are interest groups who would like to see a ban of DJI, the Chinese drone manufacturer which is currently a leader in this market. I think that this news cycle will be followed by some politician proposing a ban on grounds of national security (similar arguments to the Tik Tok ban).

Oh that's unexpected; my guess is that your setting is for some reason already set as "always download" but don't worry because you can undo that by choosing "Always Open Similar Files" option, see here how to do it https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.mozilla.org%2Fen... Note this preference (open or download) is specific to each file type, so you may have to set the option multiple times if you are opening multiple types of files.

By default, in Zen Browser (and I think every browser in the Firefox family does the same) will ask you if you want to open or download the file. When you choose between these 2 options, if you want you can select "always do this for files of this type" and it won't ask you again. However if you don't select that, it will keep asking every time.

In my experience Firefox-derived browsers like Zen and Librewolf are the ones really bringing forward the idea of "browser made for the user". Firefox proper feels just like another corporate product, with the associated "sponsored content" silliness (e.g. home tab sponsored shortcuts, search engine deals etc).

I was in the same boat a few years ago when I first set up my home theatre PC (after being frustrated by the limitations of Google TV/Apple TV/Fire TV), the hardware was made of surplus parts that I had took off over the years from my gaming PC when doing hardware upgrades. Apparently the CPU was too old to be supported by win11 so I went Linux. I was already familiar with Ubuntu but I chose PopOs due to Ubuntu not working well with Flatpak. All is been good and I have no complaints.

Comment I remember the split, it was bad. (Score 1) 5

Foursquare was big in the early days of mobile apps. It was regularly in the top 10 apps in App Store and Play Store. The check-in and gamification (badges) features were what gave it traction as a social. Then the split came and most popular features were removed from the main Foursquare app. I remember opening Foursquare one day and I could not check in, there was a notification saying I had to download another app. After downloading Swarm, all my badges were gone. Most of my friends quit around that time as a result of the changes, so I had no reason to be there and eventually deleted the Swarm app (I had already deleted Foursquare when the split happened). After the split, Facebook became the preferred way to share your check-ins, at least around my social circles. Foursquare in the meantime decided to focus on B2B products such as its paid API service (which I think is used by Uber and other apps to retrieve POI data). Probably they made more money from the API product, but they gave up the growth potential based on their user base.
