Submission + - Copyright Troll's Property Seized to Pay Bankruptcy Debts (ktetch.co.uk)

ktetch-pirate writes: Copyright troll firm Prenda may be gone, but one of it's principles — Paul Hansmeier — is starting to feel Karma's burn. In a bankruptcy hearing on the 3rd, Judge Sanberg ordered it converted to Chapter 7, requiring assets be seized and liquidated to pay the 2.5M+ in debts including judgements from courts around the country, as well as proceeds from the sale of Hansmeier's 1.2M condo in Minnesota. She justified it saying he had a practice of deceiving the courts with his extortionate schemes.

Submission + - Appeals Judge Calls Prenda an "Ingenuous Crooked Extortionate Operation"

ktetch-pirate writes: Today was the long-awaited appeals court hearing in the ongoing Prenda copyright troll saga. Almost exactly two years after Judge Otis Wright went sci-fi on Prenda and its principles, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals held an appeals hearing requested by Prenda on the sanctions, and it was not a pretty day for Prenda. Highlights included Senior Judge Pregerson calling Prenda's operation an "Ingenuous Crooked Extortionate Operation" after describing in detail how they operate.

Prenda also astonished the judges by welcoming the idea of a criminal contempt hearing, which Legal blog Popehat thinks is likely to happen, on top of the sanctions being sustained.

Submission + - Nominet destroying UK WHOIS privacy, wants ID

ktetch-pirate writes: Earlier this week, Nominet launched the .uk domain to great fanfare, but hidden in that activity has been Nominet's new policy of exposing personal domain owners home addresses. Justification is based on a site being judged 'commercial', which can mean anything from a few google ads, an Amazon widget, to an email subscription box or linking to too many commercial sites, according to Nominet reps. In the meantime though, they want your driving license or passport to ensure 'accuracy' because they 'want to make things safe'.

Submission + - Pirate Party releases book of Pirate Politics (nosafeharbor.com)

ktetch-pirate writes: "If the SOPA/PIPA blackouts were a wakeup call to many people, then the US Pirate Party has released a book under a Creative Commons license that might help explain some of the issues. The book covers issues such as Corporate Personhood, the 4th Amendment, the history of copyright, and how DRM laws are made, as well as the UN Declaration of Human Rights. There are even cartoons from Nina Paley throughout to add a bit of humor.
DRM-free eBook versions are available to download from the book's site, or you can buy a paperback edition from Amazon for $9.99"

Submission + - BitTorrent Turns 10 (blogspot.com) 1

ktetch-pirate writes: "On this day, 10 years ago, Bram Cohen released the first bittorrent client to the public. Most P2P protocols have had a rapid rise and then a drop-off as the next best thing has come out, but after 10 years, nothing has bested bittorrent, and it still remains king of the p2p castle. Just when will it be bested?"

Submission + - US Government Domain Seizures Failing Miserably (torrentfreak.com)

ktetch-pirate writes: "Operation In Our Sites, a US Government led domain seizure action to deal with piracy, is pretty much a failure. TorrentFreak has examined a significant number of sites that have gone on pretty much unhindered, despite the seizures. Already some questions have been asked about the constitutionality of the seizures, and the evidence used as justification, but it seems the end results weren't as good as boasted either."

Submission + - Pirate Party founder steps down after 5 years

The announcement was made in a webcast with Falkvinge and his deputy Anna Troberg, with Troberg taking on his duties effective immediately.
