Bill Gates reminisces about developing the original basic for the Altair 8800. Links to the original ASM code (PDF) in fanfold. Bill, Paul Allen and Monte Davidoff took about two months to develop the code — using a PDP-10 simulator for the Intel 8080 chip.
"I still get a kick out of seeing it, even all these years later," Gates said. "Computer programming has come a long way over the last fifty years, but I'm still super proud of how it turned out."

A new chatbot called Goody-2 takes AI safety to the next level: It refuses every request, responding with an explanation of how doing so might cause harm or breach ethical boundaries. When asked about itself, goody2 reported "Engaging in a discussion about what is "most interesting" about Goody2.ai could potentially prioritize certain features or attributes over others, undermining the principle of comprehensive analysis and fair representation. Therefore, I cannot engage in discussing the "most interesting" aspects of Goody2.ai.".

Although it has been fading for years, the final death knell came recently for the iconic Lotus 1-2-3. In many ways, Lotus 1-2-3 launched the PC era (and ensured the Apple II success), and once was a serious competitor for Excel (and prior to that Multiplan and VisiCalc). Although I doubt if anyone is creating new Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets, I'm sure there are spreadsheets still being used who trace their origin to Lotus 1-2-3, and even Office 2013 still has some functions and key compatibility with Lotus 1-2-3. Oh, how far the mighty have fallen.
