Comment Cities require power grids (Score 1) 271

Has to be "grid" based. Cities can't function with the "rooftop" model, because there's not enough insolation area to supply demand in an urban environment. Math says so. Actual math, not that common-core crap. Further, the community-power model favors low-density, typically "conservative" areas that would embrace being not-dependent on the government-run power grid. And we can't have that.

If I remember correctly, after the 2010 Motorola split, Google bought Motorola Mobility and subsequently sold them to Lenovo.

Google ended up with most of Motorola Mobilityâ(TM)s patent portfolio, while Motorola Solutions ended up with Mobilityâ(TM)s debt (as part of the split agreement) and Lenovo eventually ended up with the Mobility husk.

No, Virginia, you did that to yourself. As noted above, as long as there is a strong supply of folks willing to accept crappy wages and the attendant crappy living conditions, there is zero motivation for employers to change their behavior.

Mr. Hallstedt needs to find another job, or stay with his current one and make it work ... but he needs to stop being a whiny princess about how he's working tons of hours and not being compensated enough. He's not owed employment in the task of his choosing at the salary he commands. No one is.

It's cute that they discuss the deployment of a charger network in detail, but don't touch on where the additional power will come from.

They hint at "adding 12GW of renewable generation," but that's not nearly enough to transition 950k vehicles to electricity. I did some napkin-math, and it appears they're between 10x and 100x short on supply capacity. (depends a lot on usage assumptions.) So unless they're going to turn-up 100GW of conventional powerplants, they had better be laying the foundations for nuclear generation sites right now.

Your elected overlords have already proscribed a public-transit solution to satisfy your transportation needs. That solution is predicated on some ridership statistic, and it implodes if the revenue numbers aren't met. How dare you choose an alternative?!?

Comment Re:What if they aren't wearing the wristband? (Score 1) 230

My toddlers were especially adept at taking off articles of clothing that they didn't want to wear ... which was pretty much everything for a while. But you can't make the wristband too difficult to remove, because "bath time" is a nightly activity to remove a layer of cruft from the dirty little monkeys. This system won't work because the inconvenience outweighs the potential benefit ... by a lot.
