Making a story compelling is not entirely a function of the material.
It is funny to see anyone surprised about it.
Aside from an original Moto Droid Razr, which was bought new in 2011 and was replaced after 2-3 years of normal usage (with battery still healthy), my phones have since all been bought refurbished and unlocked, about one year after release. These phones seem to last at least 2 years before the battery has lost enough capacity as to make the phone hard to use. My current phone is a Pixel 2 XL (bought in 2019, refurbished) and the AccuBattery app tells me I have about 90% capacity left.
In the mean time, after an original Moto Droid Razr as well, my wife has had two iPhones, a 6+ and now an 8+. The 6+ is still being used by the grand child with good battery but the 8+ is showing signs of battery needing to be replaced. The 8+ is used much more heavily than the 6+ was due to changes in usage patterns.
One of my kids just replaced the battery on her 7+. Another kid still has an iPhone 8 and the battery is fine. He is not a heavy user. The 3rd one typically replaces the phone for mechanical damage before their time so that's another issue entirely.
Personally, I believe that 3 years battery life is adequate. It's not that expensive to replace the battery. I am more concerned about the software obsolescence after the phones stop being updated. Objectively, the iPhones 6+, 7+ or 8+ and my Pixel 2 XL are perfectly serviceable and as they are well taken care of (with cases and screen protectors), they look like new. The only reason they will be replaced at this point is when they will stop being upgraded, or if a major accident happens.
PS: I write Android apps and I still have most of my old phones that I use for testing. My favorite is the Moto-X 2014. Battery life was never great when the phone was new but the phone is just a great device. Beautiful display, excellent ergonomics, a few thoughtful and very useful gestures that Motorola added to the otherwise plain Google Android experience, I still very much enjoy using this phone and it is still capable of running the apps I use daily. I particularly enjoy the camera in spite of its modest low light performance because it has very little distortion and I use it with a magnifier to make excellent macro pictures.
