Comment The original wasn't popular either (Score 3, Informative) 264

To be honest compared to the usual themes of modern "mass market" films, Blade Runner 1982 or 2017 is probably too deep for a mass audience. Seriously comic books are considered deep these days.

Most people is prime movie going age don't even know about the original movie, don't know who Harrison Ford is, or know about Philip K. Dick. The 50+ crowd for home the original was canon, probably aren't making a huge effort to see the move opening weekend, and are likely to wait for it to stream.

Comment Depends on battery lifespan (Score 1) 487

I still use an iPhone 4s because it has retained its battery capacity over all those years. If I had confidence that the iPhone X would last equally as long I might consider it. Sort of like buying a pair of Alden shoes, you can wear for decades with simple resole. Over time its more cost effective than buying $80 shoes every year at DSW. That said my 4 year old MBP already needs a battery replacement for the "glued" in batteries. No more MBP's for me. The cost is not in line with the expected lifespan. For something that expensive, the consumable components like batteries should be user replaceable or removable.

How about having hired Snowden as a contractor?

How about missing every single terror attack?

How about missing the Russian infiltration of Crimea or move into Syria?

How about rendition, secret torture camps, public exposure of torture?

How about perpetually killing civilians with drone strikes based on their "intelligence"?

How about missing the fact that Bin Ladin was living around the corner in an allied country for 10 YEARS?

How about not finding WMD?

And they are losing credibility due to leaks? Please.

Comment Auto company death spiral (Score 3, Insightful) 122

Self driving cars are a death spiral for car companies.

The liability will be too great. Every accident will be the "car's fault" and result in litigation. Eventually a software bug will bankrupt one of the car companies.

They are primarily useful for "fleet" sales not consumer sales and will kill profit margins.

This is a win win for Z. He gets credit today for "giving it all away" without actually giving it all away today.

Comment Just $10 billion? (Score 1) 370

The "war on terror", fought in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Somalia, and Pakistan has cost over $6 trillion, and resulted in complete strategic failure in each nation.

You would think the fact that the US has failed in every shooting war since Vietnam would be enough to convince politicians that the "military option" is the last thing they want to do. They would be better served to gut the military budget because clearly believing that they have the "best military in the world" leads them into wars they never end up winning.

My bet is on Mad Max.
