Submission + - SPAM: Rehashed NYT yarn on Russian surveillance shot down by Nokia

juul_advocate writes: Finnish telecommunications equipment provider Nokia has termed as "misleading" claims made by The New York Times about the company's role in Russia's lawful intercept system. The NYT story is a rehashing of a story published by the American tech website TechCrunch back in 2019, where the reporter, Zach Whittaker, said it offered "new insight into the scope and scale of the Russian surveillance system... and how Russian authorities gain access to the calls, messages and data of customers of the country’s largest phone provider, Mobile TeleSystems". A Nokia spokesperson said, in a detailed rebuttal, that the NYT had confirmed that the documents used as source material for the story were the same as those used by TechCrunch.

What is not stated in this Bloomberg report is that the Internet 2.0 paper states right at the start: "This study has no insights into the origins of COVID-19, however we have come to the conclusion that based on the data analysed it suggests the virus was highly likely to be spreading virulently in Wuhan, China as early as the summer of 2019 and definitely by the early Autumn." Read the paper in full here: https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Finternet2-0.com%2FPCR%2520... The data source is IMHO flaky: Database Source: Bidcenter.com.cn Bidcenter.com.cn is an aggregator website that holds Chinese government procurement data aggregated from government website data. It has been active online since June 2007. According to rankchart.org "bidcenter.com.cn" traffic estimate is about 27,211 unique visitors and 54,422 pageviews per day. Every unique visitor makes about 2 pageviews on average. Alexa Traffic Rank estimates that bidcenter.com.cn is ranked number 1,394 in the world. This so-called "open-source research method" which is a great name for searching on the Internet is generally full of holes.

Submission + - Rust support in Linux may be possible by 5.14 release: Torvalds (itwire.com)

juul_advocate writes: The first patches for Rust support in the Linux kernel have been posted and the man behind the kernel says the fact that these are being discussed is much more important than a long post by Google about the language. Linus Torvalds told iTWire in response to queries that Rust support was "not there yet", adding that things were "getting to the point where maybe it might be mergeable for 5.14 or something like that".
