In the spirit of the Oscars, that is, a bunch of people getting together to give themselves some prizes, I propose that we Slashdot users get some prizes for ourselves. And, again taking our cue from the Oscars, what better way to do this than to make up some awards? I can't promise gold statuettes of naked men, but the acclaim of your peers and adulation of the masses would be nice, would it not?

I foresee categories such as the following:

Best Journal Entry
Best Submitted Story
Best Poll
Best Comment in a Leading Role (that is, starting a thread)
Best Comment in a Supporting Role (that is, a reply to some other comment)
Best Troll

No male/female distinctions - sorry, guys, you'll just have to buck up and try and compete with the ladies. The mechanics of the thing are open to debate, but I think that there should be a nomination process, and then voting on the top five nominees. Suggestions for prizes are also welcome; can anyone think of something that might be meaningful in a Slashdot context?

  Not really sheer boredom, more annoyance with all of the Oscar hype. This "academy" is just a bunch of people who give themselves prizes once a year. It's not like it is anything but a big ego-fest, by people who are culturally clueless. These people (for the most part) have done nothing that would earn my respect, let alone some kind of award. There are exceptions, but not very many.

  I thought that nominations would be by posting to a specific JE. I'd compile the results, then circulate an e-mail to ten or fifteen people who would serve as a nominating committee. Some kind of ranked voting would be used to select the top five (or so) nominees. I would then post a ballot-like JE, and users would be vote by e-mail to an address that I would set up for that purpose. Any /. user would be free to vote, but I am not sure how I would authenticate a ballot to a user. Many users do not want

    You know, I'm not sure that actual "awards" are necessary -- just nominations would be honor enough -- and they should be open. People offering their support for the nominations could suffice as "votes." And does it matter what the all-time favorite of the majorit is? It basically boils down to a popularity contest, and I'm not sure that many of us are comfortable with that whole milieu. (I'm not, anyway.)
    
    I think that taking it off-line (i.e., via e-mail) would make it more work than fun. I'd prefer that

      Yes, I think that I like your idea. Keep it open, and the actual awards are not really the point. The whole "popularity contest" thing is one of the things that annoys me about the Oscars. More work than fun is exactly what it was looking like, when I thought about it. :-)
      
      Perhaps two discussions: one for calendar year 2003, and one for everything prior to that? That would make it simple.

        I think the voting would make it interesting as well. Not necessarily the "winner" but, like at Sundance, the Audience Award. It represents the most popular choice and not necessarily the "best".
        
        A good example was the '03 Sundance. Monster won the Jury prize while Whale Rider was selected by the Audience.
        
        Since we don't have Jury of Knowledgeable /. Critics... let's just do the Audience prize.

      While I'm at it, I'd like to suggest a category for "Best Griper" (with gmhowell and Em in mind) and Most Creative Use of Profanity (which, of course, belongs to SamtheButcher, /.-renowned creator of BFAA and FSoF!).

    Oh come on, I'm sure at least Brett objects to gay marrage (where has he been lately anyway?). I'm also sure at least a few other conservative Slashdotters object as well.

      OK, back to the old drawing board. Also, someone pointed out that this could be construed as mocking CmdrTaco, so it's probably a better idea not to use that name. I don't always agree with them, but Rob does not deserve to be held up for ridicule. So, I'm still working on a name.

When I read this and I though "what is the best journal I read recently?" This one came up at once, I even recalled the exact title (and that says something!) It's got action, emotion, humour, everything a good story needs.
I don't know for the other categories, but this one deserves a nomination. Well, that's what the Shark thinks and everybody can disagree.
