Journal johndiii's Journal: Is Bobby Bad? 9

"It's very hard to accept," said Barbara Cutts, 46, a nurse's aide. "A lot of people are looking at him like a bad person, but he's not, he really isn't."

Bobby Cutts is accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend and dumping her body in a park. Now, we also learn that his visitation rights with his nine-year-old daughter were suspended due to emotional and physical abuse on his part.

In the first story (and several others I have seen), his stepmother described him as a generous man who was good with kids and coached various youth sports. Fox News has basically the same story, with some additional details.

He was apparently also good with women, having three children with three different women, one of whom he married shortly after she had his baby. News reports state that he was talking with yet another intimate acquaintance the night before Jessie Davis was murdered. And it looks like he enlisted yet another friend to help him cover up the murder.

Presumably, none of these people thought that he was a bad person. However, it looks like that is exactly what he is. While the murder charge remains just an accusation, the police were told where to find the body - which strongly suggests that they have the murderer in custody.

It seems like whenever someone is arrested for a high-profile crime, even for a particularly heinous one (as this appears to be), there is someone who steps up to say that the accused is not a bad person. Is this willful ignorance, or the well-established human ability to disbelieve unpleasant facts? I consider it a point of integrity not to do so, but many people do it without thinking.

That alone to me is a predictor of bad behavior. Or at the very least, a complete inability to understand the purpose behind traditional marriage.
  • hitler was a vegetarian. i'm sure some people thought he was sweet. he may even have been a good friend to some people. but none of that excuses the behavior for which he is most remembered.
    • Yes.

Whew. That was easy. :-) Next? :-D

        that's exactly what i meant.

i just meant i'd ruined it by referencing the nazi regime. that usually signals the end of useful discussion.
      • This is kind of off topic, but a cute story none the less.

I was talking to a dear friend who was bemoaning a romantic dry spell, and exasperated said, "Even Hitler had a girlfriend!".

        • So she goes for short guys with toothbrush mustaches? Or megalomaniacs? In the latter case, I'd suggest Ethelred, except that he's married already. :-)

Actually, though, it's quite on-topic. Do you suppose that Hitler's girlfriend thought that he was bad? If she had been interviewed by CNN, she probably would have said something along the lines of "He's always so sweet to the dogs, I'm sure that he wouldn't harm a fly! It's all that Himmler's fault."
          • Actually the friend was a guy who wondered what was so wrong with him that he couldn't find a girlfriend while Hitler could. So I doubt Ethelred would be his type ;-) But you're right. She would have rationalized it somehow. She would have chosen to see the good things he did rather than the massive overwhelming bad. Wives stay with husbands who molest their children, they call the children liars when they try to get help, people can deny amazing wrongs.
