Comment "they can't bite and so can't spread malaria" (Score 1) 184

the transformed insects have mouths that resemble male mosquito mouths. That means they can't bite and so can't spread the malaria parasite.

Oh, sweet. So we aren't going to try and get rid of mosquitos completely, just make it so they won't bite people anymore.

That seems like a much better approach than wiping them off the face of the planet.

In addition, the insects' reproductive organs are deformed, which means they can't lay eggs. As more and more female mosquitoes inherit two copies of the modification, more and more become sterile.

158 Corporations and $21 Million shouldn't be a surprise. It's the status quo for US politics.

SOPA is just one of the many pieces of legislation being bought and paid for by corporations. So after you write your senators and representatives, go to http://movetoamend.org/ and sign the petition to end corporate personhood!

Submission + - Scientists Re-grow Dental Enamel

Anonymous Coward writes: "Dental enamel is the hardest tissue produced by the body. It cannot regenerate itself, because it is formed by a layer of cells that is lost by the time the tooth appears in the mouth. The enamel spends the remainder of its lifetime vulnerable to wear, damage, and decay. In hopes of eventually replacing teeth, scientists from Japan have developed a new method for growing dental enamel."
