I have this complaint about any inordinately long timeout. One example is network timeouts. A packet travels around the world in less than a second, why is this thing waiting ten seconds plus to tell me the connection failed? Is there a case where a firewall grabs the SYN and then waits five seconds to forward it?

The problem isn't just the mining, it is refining the ore to a usable form. Almost all of that is done in China. The US can't scale up making WW2 era artillery shells for Ukraine, it isn't going to have refining capacity for rare earths anytime soon either.

I think we would skip this step and go right to wireless detection of the speed limit and global refusal to exceed. Maybe then the police will have time to go after drivers who obstruct traffic.

I know MBAs in general inherit a lot of derision here, and in many cases deserved. But, I have found the things I learned while getting my MBA have been extremely valuable during my career in IT. The ideas behind modern finance, accounting practices, organizational and human management, and even basic statistics (I was not a STEM major in undergraduate). There wasn't anything in the curriculum about strip mining business assets to benefit private equity ownership. Granted, this was 20 years ago. The things I learned have been a great help in understanding and thriving a career in corporate work. An MBA can be a great asset to almost any career, if used properly.

It doesn't require a smartphone. You are free to haul your desktop into the restaurant and use an attached camera to decode the QR. Or you can decode it by hand if you like and type in the URL manually.
