Pirates as a Marketplace 214

John Riccitiello, the CEO of Electronic Arts, made some revealing comments in an interview with Kotaku about how the company's attitudes are shifting with regard to software piracy. Quoting: "Some of the people buying this DLC are not people who bought the game in a new shrink-wrapped box. That could be seen as a dark cloud, a mass of gamers who play a game without contributing a penny to EA. But around that cloud Riccitiello identified a silver lining: 'There's a sizable pirate market and a sizable second sale market and we want to try to generate revenue in that marketplace,' he said, pointing to DLC as a way to do it. The EA boss would prefer people bought their games, of course. 'I don't think anybody should pirate anything,' he said. 'I believe in the artistry of the people who build [the games industry.] I profoundly believe that. And when you steal from us, you steal from them. Having said that, there's a lot of people who do.' So encourage those pirates to pay for something, he figures. Riccitiello explained that EA's download services aren't perfect at distinguishing between used copies of games and pirated copies. As a result, he suggested, EA sells DLC to both communities of gamers. And that's how a pirate can turn into a paying customer."

I imagine weapon switching working along the lines of the scrolling seen in the video. You use one hand to aim and shoot and the other for "swishing" through your weapons. Activating the sniper scope could be your arms-in-a-different-position scenario.

It's the movement I'm tripping over. Would you lean to strafe? Twist at the hip to turn? Simply nod your head to change view angle? Voice commands would be good too, for things that are trivial with mouse & keyboard but would be ridiculously difficult with full-body motion. "180!" "Rocket jump!"

Damn. Now I'm looking forward to a Natal FPS.

It's a Russian doll kinda thing. Ballot in one envelope (with zero voter info). That envelope in another (with voter info). That envelope in another (with election address and stamp).

At the election board, outside envelope gets opened, first inside envelope gets recorded as having voted (because you have a right to know if you got counted). Second inside envelope (with secret ballot still inside) gets bundled with hundreds or thousands of others before being handled again, opened, and scanned.

Of course, there's nothing to stop them from saying they do that and doing something else.

Mod parent up. This is exactly what's needed - especially for the smaller programming teams. More games period (and therefore, statistically, more good games) can be made if the team can focus on the game itself, and just plug in graphics, physics, AI, etc APIs.

Granted, it's sortta been done. Things like DMM, Euphoria... they're getting closer for sure, but wow, TFU was disappointing.

Comment google maps, for camping anyone? (Score 1) 172

So I went camping on the Oregon Coast a few weeks ago, and had a hell of a time finding the right campground.
While out there I had an idea to make my own 'google map hack' for showing campgrounds around the state (there were absolutly no drugs -- mushrooms -- involved in coming up with this idea, I swear ;))

So when I got home, I emailed oregonstateparks and got the info I needed to map out the campgrounds and stateparks all over the state. I want to eventually do this nationwide but haven't had time to work on it.

I used to have a "maps application" look to it, but since the official API came out, I just updated it so it actually worked again. Currently, I'm only showing a random 20 parks out of the 400 or so in the database.

I'd like to separate them out by region (north coast, portland metro, etc...) and also maybe map hiking trails via the polyline object.
