Journal jawtheshark's Journal: Oh, the pain... 2

Regular readers from slashdot know that I have a new laptop. The old one, a P-III 600MHz/256Meg RAM/6Gig HD (I used it in a 512Meg/80Gig config) is going to be sold on eBay. For that reason I put back Windows 98 SE on it. The key taped on the bottom works, and so I can sell it with a legal operating system. Always better than those phrases "Windows XP is installed, but no license is available, so you have to delete it..."

My plan is to install Win98 with the key for the machine, install drivers and useful stuff (Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, 7-Zip, etc...) Alas, I forgot how painful Windows 98 is. Oh, god, what did I do to myself.... What am I doing to this poor guy that is going to buy it.

A machine that ran WinXP just wonderfully is put in a state sluggyness and slowability.... God, the next time a fanboy on slashdot talk about the fact that OS X becomes faster which each release, I'll tell him that the step from 98SE to XP was exactly the same...

Update

I tried Windows Update... The fuckers disabled that competely at Microsoft. I would at least have expected to get the patches up to the level that they stopped support. *sigh*

  • 1998... that was the time of the Linux kernel 2.0 - what did you expect? Even Microsoft has had some form of progress going on all these years.

Instead of setting up Windows 98 on it, why didn't you go for something like Ubuntu?
    • How do you expect to sell a computer without Windows? If this is someone wanting a cheap computer who doesn't know much, I'd rather not put "Ubuntu" in the sales pitch.... I know Ubuntu is better, you know it, but "the others" don't...

Never trust anyone who says money is no object.

Working...
