Journal jawtheshark's Journal: Ask Macheads: MacBook Pro 16

This is not for me, but for a friend. She's a bio-medical Phd student and her current laptop is dying (no wonder, it most certainly was a budget Win-PC, 4 years ago) She lives 250km from here, so I can't help her in-situ, but only by remote means. She sees all her peers using Apples and she wants one too now. So, smart as she is, she asks me advice on Apple machines.

She wants a MacBook Pro 15" 2.16GHz Dual Core model. That's okay with me, but I warned her about the fact that all Intel Macs are first revision Apples. Problems to my knowledge are: overheating (too much termal paste), discoloration of pads, and there was a third thing which I do not remember. I personally wouldn't buy a first revision Apple ;-)

My question: are the current MacBook Pros still 1st revision? If yes, when do the 2nd revision MacBook Pros come out? I told her to wait for January, but even about that date, I'm not sure...

Her current laptop is physically falling apart, as far as her description goes. That's not really fun, if your writing you're Phd thesis. So, if I can give her a "go", it would be nice. I just don't want that her first Mac is a bad experience...

  • Really damned quiet around here this AM. Where is everyone?

I expected at least four or five replies by now.
    • Definately not of help, but appreciated anyway.

I read your Journal Entries, but I can't compete with a Porsche. As an Audi TT driver, I am required to shut up and be humble when we're talking Porsches. I've got a nice car, but there are so many that are much better than mine :-(

Heck, I drive an old Mercury Mystique (Ford Mondeo), so I'm just living vicariously through others:)

Anyway, half of the replies you would have received would suggest a Lenovo or similar and not address the mac issue.
        • I drive the Mercedes A-Class CDi of my wife most of the time in order to save on gas. The TT isn't exactly an prime example of a fuel efficient car. (Okay, 25mpg is not bad, but compared to Diesel cars...) So, I do have a sporty car, I just don't use it often anymore. Still, I need to sell the Mercedes. We can't keep paying for three cars.

Hey, while true, a new Lenovo doesn't sound

  • Seems that Apple is holding their annual Paris Expo in a couple of weeks. Wait and see what new things come out of that.

Can't really answer your question, as I just don't know.

I'm writing this on a TiBook, and if I were buying a new notebook right now, I'd probably grab one of the last run of PPC based books instead of risking an Intel Mac. If the local Apple stores have any still in stock they should be significantly discounted, a rare occurence with Apple hardware. From third parties I see prices as low as $300 for iBooks [pricewatch.com] and $540 for PowerBooks. [pricewatch.com] Far from top of the line powerhouses, but still extremely competitive at t

    • Well, I agree (I saw a Dual G5 desktop on sale too, I just don't have an excuse to buy one! 200€ off... Damn). Alas, the girl needs all the power she can get. As far as I understood she'll use it mainly to do digital image manipulation from medical machinery. That needs all the oopha it can get.

I had an Apple iBook G3 600MHz/640Meg RAM for three years until the logic board failed and Apple didn't want to replace it. I was happy with it, but it was mainly used for email/surfing and light applicat

She's a Phd student and doesn't understand ductape?
    • I think I should make a picture of my own P-III laptop. Duct tape all over the place.

No, the problem seems to be that the LCD panel has loose contacts, which is (frankly) annoying.

Mine are Ductape and elastic bands.

I had a problem with a loose contact in my power connector - the battery is dead ... - 2 elastic band round the edge of the laptop hold the plug just so... ;)

No amount of genius can overcome a preoccupation with detail.
